captured recoil rod springs - P93DC

Anybody know how to change out the springs?
Ruger says to do it on the gun with the slide locked back, that somehow that will enable you to get to some "c clamp" that holds the collar and springs on.
I don't have a clue... all I see is a rod, two springs, a collar that won't come off.
What does this C clamp look like and how is it removed while on the gun?

I couldn't figure out how to change out the springs so I had to send the recoil rod back to Ruger.
So they call me today, and the tech tells me it's easy just leave the guide rod on the gun, lock the slide back which I guess compresses the springs, and then take off some clip to get the springs off.

I can't figure out what he was talking about so I just agreed. :oops:

I don't know what he is talking about but know the next time I want to replace a simple recoil spring I don't want to ship it back to Ruger.

I was watching a utube video of a guy with his p95 and when he pulled back the springs it exposed the collar retainer and a tiny tiny black peice of metal looking like it's recessed into the end of the guide rod.
That has to the peice holding it all on, there is nothing else there.

The question is how does it come off? What tool gets it off, is it a disposable peice that has to be broken off, because since this little clamp is recessed I don't see a way to get a tool on it.

I just looked at the P-95s Owners Manual on page 33 in shows a diagram of the clip, It appears to be a wire style C Clip that would be removed with a dental pick or a set of tweezers..

If it were me I'd want a new C Clip as it could be easily damaged..

That's it. A recoil spring collar retainer.
And a dental pick is a good idea for sure. I'll try that.
Along with some extra ones because no way after I pry it off would I trust it again.
Ruger at least has the springs and collars and retainers. So does Brownells. Neither have guide rods with tips however.
I figured I could just buy the whole assembly.
Nope.

In fact Ruger has few parts for the p93 which to me is incredible. I asked the guy for a new recoil rod/spring assembly and he said "it ain't like we have them lying around, it's a great gun, but we haven't had parts for awhile". Heck the gun was just discontinued in 2006!!!

Beautiful. One of the downfalls of getting a slightly obsolete pistol that I never considered.

I noticed the P-93 manual didn't even show that type of recoil rod assembly in the schematics..

Actually found a couple extra recoil rod assemblies with springs on Numrichs.
It was Kind of a wake up call with Ruger telling me they have no parts so I am going to get a repair kit together for all my 93's.
a couple of recoil rod assemblies, maybe a couple extractors, not sure what is the most common spring to fail besides Recoil and magazine springs.

I don't need gun that have parts that are impossible to find, so I better get them now, parts will just get more hard to find.
Any ideas of a small repair kit of 4-5 items to keep on hand for my 93's?

I really wish Wolff or another company would create some nice, non-captured recoil springs for Rugers. I love my P95 but I don't care for the captured double spring design.

Is the guide rod and spring set up on the P93 and P95 anything like whats on the P94? The captures on my P944 went MIA a couple years ago and I just use it without them, works fine. Makes it easier to clean and lube the springs and guide rod as well.

Gizmo, I have ordered some recoil rod and spring assemblies.
I figure for $8 I can get a few and be set for life.
Before they are not able to be obtained.

However I am interested in you shooting your 94 uncaptured.
When you used yours uncaptured, have you had any issues?
Are they a pain to put back together trying to compresss the spring each time?
If they guns work fine with no capture collar, what's the point of having a collar?
Seems to me it would best NOT to have them captured since it would make changing springs no problem.
Good thing to know.

No problems at all with using it with the springs uncaptured. I know there are several others on here who use theirs the same way. Putting everything back together is no big deal, not much harder then with them captured. I think they have them captured just to make it a bit easier for those not used to tearing down a gun.
