I ran a search and checked the FAQ's before posting.
I need a new rear sight for a Ruger Super Blackhawk, and the offerings are with bump and without bump.
I think I know what the bump is, but can someone tell me how to recognize the difference between the two? So I can be sure.
Thanks,
olcop

The "bump" refers to the protective "ears" found on all SBH that are not flattops.

If the "frame" on your gun has a raise place in the frame at the sight...that is the bump they are referring to.

A flattop will have a completely flat area around the sight.

Thanks Jim,
I thought that was it, but wanted to be sure before I ordered any parts for it.

PM inbound to you too

The bump referred to in the OP is on the sight itself. There is a relief in the top of the frame for the bump. All SBHs have the protective ears for the sights. The bump and the ears are two different critters. Whether or not you need one with the bump depends on the frame. Some info in the links below.

I stand corrected...all of my SBH's have the bump on the sight and I assumed they all did...apparently not.

I also assumed the bump referred to the ears...apparently not.

olcop,

There's a little more to it:

The bump started about 15 years ago on the aluminum rear sights.
Here's the underneath view of a sight with the bump:

If you order a new sight with bump today, you will receive an all steel sight with the bird cast in it like this but with the standard sq notch sight blade:

Hope this helps,

yes, as Hondo says, my guess this was done to allow the pivot hole in (through) the top strap to be LOWER in the frame.....the top of the sight body will still be "flush" with the top (outside), but a "bump" ( or hump?) UNDER the sight body, brings the hole lower......yes if you look into the slot cut into the top strap,, there is a wave, or divot for this "bump" to sit into, hard to explain, and no pictures to show this anomoly....always seemed to me , to be MORE work (effort) thus costly? but a good reason to have more (extra) metal over the hole.....if you ever seen a 'eared' gun ,with the 'ears" lowered ,cut down to make the gun look like a 'true" flatop, the pivot hole is just about at the top of the frame.......soooo, the "ears" help 'protect' the sight body and the "bump" allows more strength" to the pivot area at the front of the sight body, ergo, the "bump"..............
wonder just how this is explained in the original engineering plans or any patent application drawing.......hhmmm 8)

Kinda like the sculpting in the top strap of an older Single Six, drift sight gun, ,so as to NOT make it a "true flat top".........
