I have an LCP and have always carried it fully loaded, with a bullet in the chamber. Recently I have read a lot that you shouldn't carry with a bullet in the chamber. I carry mine in a pocket holster in the front pocket. In an emergency, if I had to pull the slide back to load the chamber, I think I would be at a big disadvantage. I frequently walk my dogs at night and if some one ran up behind me, I would have no time to chamber a shell. I have read that if you drop the LCP, the gun could go off. Isn't that why the earlier models were called back...to fix that problem. Is there any chance a LCP could go off in a holster, in a pocket without the trigger being pulled. Thanks.

Not sure about the exact details about the LCP recall related to the possibility of discharging what I do know is many many people do currently carry with a round chambered. Not only from reading the boards, but there's alot of LCP owners at the range I shoot at, never talking to one who carried and didn't have one chambered. That's not to say there isn't a problem, I have no idea, just they are doing it without apparent concern.
I am to this day still uncomfortable in condition 0 or even 1. Mainly due to being new to it. I'm trying to break myself of it. My firearms instructor preached the need to do so. Stating that in a real situation "You just will plain NOT have time to un-saftey, rack, then start the process of trying to achieve an effective aimed shot." Too many seconds have passed by then as I was told.

I would not worry in the least about having an AD from dropping your LCP if it was manufactured manufactured with a serial number prefix of 371 or higher (371-xxxxx). If you serial number prefix is 370 (370-xxxxx) you need to look for a diamond stamped in the rear of the gun (see attached pic). If you have the diamond your okay if not you need to contact Ruger.

They are generally "double action only" and have a firing pin or striker block so it can move only if the trigger is pulled fully back. Therefore, they are "drop safe", i.e. dropping them will not cause them to fire and will fire only if the trigger is intentionally pulled.

So if this is true, why does Ruger say in the owners manual to carry it with an empty chamber, and say it can go off if dropped? My guess is because their attorneys told them to put that in, but I believe it is disingenuous. Thanks for the good answers.

On the very rare chance that one might actually need to use their pistol... this is the absolute wrong time to have to be trying to rack one into the chamber.

I believe the policy for carry in both military and LE agencies is one in the chamber.

There was never a true reported case of an LCP discharging when dropped. Ruger did a recall anyway and put a stiffer firing pin spring and a titanium firing pin in place to further increase the safety margin.

A unloaded gun is just a 4" club.
IMHO it's find to carry with one in the pipe, I do.
Only thing I find dangerous are those pocket holsters that you can shoot threw with the expose trigger, or no holster at all.
Always carry in a holster that completely covers the trigger.
