I've been looking for one of these holsters for a long time. People who have them in this condition don't want to let go of 'em. I don't blame 'em. This one's found a permanent home with me. I had one guy tell me in a very nice and polite way that I probably wouldn't want to pay what he'd ask for his.
But I finally found a man in Minnesota who had one he was willing to sell at a reasonable price. So many thanks to him...and I hope he's keeping warm in the snow and the temperatures that are heading down into the single digits for tonight. And how appropriate that he sold me this now...my birthday falls on Thanksgiving Day this year, and I received it in the mail today. Happy Birthday to me.
In case you're wondering, this is a vintage Bianchi #50 Chapman Hi-Ride holster for a Colt Government Model .45 with a 5-inch barrel. These holsters were designed in consultation with Ray Chapman (Champion IPSC shooter) by Red Nichols. Nichols was John Bianchi's right hand man...and they were made back when Bianchi was still really Bianchi and was making their holsters in the United States. And it's an open toe holster, which I love. The belt is a suede-lined Bianchi B9. It's 1.75-inches wide, which I like cause it goes through the belt loops on my jeans. The holster has three tension screws on the back. The gun fits snugly...it isn't going to bounce or fall out. I'd have no problem using this for a field holster.
Am I happy? Yes, absolutely. Do I even care about the few small scratches on the holster? What would your first guess be?
The pistol, by the way, is the Colt Mark IV/Series 70 in stainless steel. It's only the third exception to my "I don't buy new guns" rule.
