Its going to be -45 F in Montana this week, wind chill feeling like -60. I can't even wrap my brain around that kind of cold. It got down to -24 F here in 1986 I think, that was miserable enough. You folks living out there, take care.

Speaking of Montana, I just learned something new. The USAAF actually bombed Miles City in 1944. The Yellowstone River was jammed with ice at a bridge, threatening to flood the town, so the mayor got some folks to make some 50lb bombs and dropped them on the ice jam. Nothing happened so he contacted the governor. He got in touch with a USAAF base, they agreed to drop bombs on the jam. A single B-17 was loaded with 250 lb bombs, and in the middle of a snowstorm set off on a mission to bomb Montana!. They made 3 passes, hitting the ice with single bombs on the first 2. Nothing. On the third pass they released the full load, directly on the jam, freeing it up and saving the city. So Montana and Miles City holds the distinction of being the only state/city to be bombed by the UAAF in WW2! Amazing what you can learn on the misinfonet.....

I was in Billings this morning, it was -5 not too bad as the wind was calm. -27 at 2030 in Beach ND Monday night. Filling fuel tanks oil, etc. again calm winds not too bad honestly.

BRRRRRRRRRR...... We don't even go to the range when it's 35, nothing like holding 3 lbs of cold steel. Can't imagine holding a pump handle, even with gloves, in that kind of cold.

Add Boise City Oklahoma to the list, in their case however it was accidental. Practice bombs in this case. 4 pounds of powder & 90 pounds of sand.

I stopped cowboyin' the day my horse froze under me, was like a statue in the pasture 'til mid July. And me right there on top of him, freez' solid.......
It was -10 the other morning here in north central Illinois, with a wind chill of -25. Cold enough for me. But I stayed warm and cozy in my house. The TPMS in my car showed that two of my tires were significantly under inflated due to the cold, but it was too damn cold for me to be standing outside with the electric air pump so I just ran my errands with the low pressure and had no problem. I've lived here in the Midwest for over 30 years and the coldest that I can remember was -33 a few years back which set an all time record for Rockford, IL.
I've experienced those MT winds. I was in my full sized van (not a high-top) going from Glacier NP to Livingston, MT. It was a white knuckle experience, to say the least! The woman at the motel said I should be thankful I wasn't coming in 3 hours earlier. People were pulling off the interstate and asking if they could park in her courtyard until the wind settled a bit.
She told me she once saw a motorhome and a motorcycle both get blown off I-90 with the same gust of wind. They both wrecked, but nobody died.
It's quite an experience, and I know it gets far worse than what I drove thru.
Riding a motorcycle in the windy plains states can be interesting.

Yes - -45 below is very cold but when it gets that cold the humidity goes way down -- and it's the humidity that cuts through you! At -45, it's very dry humidity and if you just stay covered up, you're OK -- you still know it's very cold but a person learns how to deal with it.

I currently live in an area that has the calmest winds ever...when they do blow 10-20 mph people really complain...I just chuckle...they have No idea!

Our low last night down here on the Gulf Coast was 60° but it will only get up to 68° what with the cold front moving through …

My grandparents heated their house with wood until my GF died in mid '70. Bedrooms would be freezing, but kitchen and lr would be toasty warm! Hated going out in the cold to replenish the wood box.......
