We had about 80 calves to brand and vaccinate on the 4th. This year the branding crew had a little more help with my daughter and son ready to work. My daughter loves chasing calves with her pink paddle, and my son loves walking around in his hat being "Wild Earp".

Cow sh*t, cow p*ss, burning hair and flesh, blood and sweat - the aroma of a day in the life of a rancher. That used to be the smell of making money. Now it's more like the smell of spending money.

It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it. And it looks like you have a capable crew to get the job done! Good looking beeves, too.

Peace and God bless, Wolfsong.

"nut fry tonight?"
Those wouldn't be big enough to even make "nuggets". I like those 500-600 pounder size. You can slice those and make sammiches for the next couple of days.
I banded for the last 10 years we had cows. My hands just weren't up to handling a knife safely in that situation.

Good looking crew there!

Funny y'all mention mountain oysters. Just yesterday,, I was teaching a private shooting class to a single family. (Husband, wife, and 4 kids,,, ages 8-13. The lady has taken a few of our WOT clinics & wanted her family to have proper training. Hubby needed it!)
Anyway,,, the kids were curious about my work & were asking about the different critters I deal with. Then,, the only boy asked if I eat the critters. The discussion went to eating odd things. Mountain oysters came up,,, and Miss Penny thought they were disgusting! To me,,, they are tasty!

Great Dakota! What a wonderful way and wonderful lifestyle to raise your kids. Peace, health, and happiness to ya'll under beautiful skies!

:D Looks like a fun day on the ranch! Could you post a picture of one of your branding irons, and explain how the brand came about? I have seen people collect antique ones on TV shows but never seen one in modern use.
Thanks,
Cape Cod Terry :D
