go to the AK forum. you'll get as many opinions as there are owners, but most owners of the Bulgarian SLR-95 swear by them(me included). I also own a Norinco milled receiver MAK 90, which is outstanding. They're all good, most perform flawlessly, so it's simply a matter fo what accessories you want to load on it.
My favorite and what is, I think, the absolute best AK (but not a 47) is the Serbian M90/95, 5.56 caliber, chrome bore, fine machining and finish quality. I am also a fan of the Chinese, Polish and Bulgarian AK's. Now if you are strictly talking AK 47's, like the man said in the post above, the Bulgarians are hard to beat. I read a couple of places that Mihail Kalashnikov himself favored the Bulgarian AK's.
Israeli Galil, and Finnish Valmet. At least they both have decent peep sights on them instead of the crappy open sights on other AKs. They also seem to be better made than the typical Combloc tractor-factory output.
I just recently bought a used AMD-65. Not really what I was looking for in an AK, but the price was right. I gave $350 cash for one that was assembled by TGI out of Tenn. It's a side folder and leaves a little to be desired for cheek weld, but it's not too bad. I would recommend staying away from any of the Century builds, as they are generally not the best.
The Russian built Saiga SGL20's are very very good. Imported by Arsenal in Las Vegas NV they run about $700 give or take whatever the reseller wants but they run Saiga and milsurp mags like a scalded dog. Will try the Tapco USA made mags next time at the range but dont expect any hiccups.

After owning several different AK's, I now have a Russian made VEPR II in 7.62x39. It is the best of the breed.
To be fair though, it is a RPK light MG modified for civilian sale, heavy receiver, heavy 20" barrel on my model, and an excellent side mount for the scope. Mine shoots 2" groups and under @ 100 yards with good reloaded ammo with the scope.
My brother has a Chinese Norinco with Draganov stock, and it is an incredible gun!
What I love about AK's is that maintenance is minimal and it will eat any ammo you put through it. His gun has shot nothing but Wolf (sometimes worse) and was not cleaned in 4 years. I took it apart, cleaned and lubed it, and it's still in phenomenal shape!
SLR-95's have steyr chome lined barrels and milled receivers. I have owned many AK's and that one is the only one I kept and still have. It gets my vote.
