Battery-powered string trimmers

A friend wants to get a new Echo curved-shaft gas trimmer,or 'weed eater' as everyone seems to call them nowadays. He is 71 and looking more like the proverbial 'little old man' by the day. I suggested he might want to get a battery-powered one.

No way he'd pay the money for a Stihl. I'm wondering which ones for $225-or-less are good quality and have been checking online.

I haven't used one;I have two gas Echos,one used to be his.

My wife bought me one of the Worx string trimmers off of the TV. I don't trust anything marketed that way but have to admit it has been pretty darn good. I have had it 4 years and the batteries continue to hold a charge. I have property but for around the house stuff it works great. I use it to edge along the sidewalks, around trees & shrubs, along fences and buildings---pretty much just edging and grass trimming---NOT major weed patch wacking. Be sure to buy an extra battery so you can swap when one gets low, instead of waiting. For medium to lite duty, I would reccomend it. For tough duty like blackberry vines---you need more horse powder. I have 2 friends that have also bought them after seeing mine in use. The only complaint I have heard is the single battery complaint. The free string is also one of those deals I was schetchy about. The do send you 6 free spools but the shipping is around 12 bucks---so pretty much a wash.

He bought a B&D 20V lithium trimmer and it includes a small blower...only one batt but it's a larger capacity version. He got it at the BX at Randolph for $139.99. The battery is charging now. His yard is small so I hope it will suffice.

Glad your Worx is doing the job and the batteries are still good. I read some some neg reviews on them so maybe you are lucky.

I bought a Black and Decker about five years ago. I don't use it a lot and I have a small yard. It has never acted up on me, other than having to replace the line from time to time. I think I paid about $60.00 for it at Home Depot. It's still on the original rechargeable battery. Would I buy another one? Yes-- Hope this helps.

Black & Decker as already mentioned. Just suggest an extra battery. They hold a good charge even when left in the trimmer, but if you need to do the amount of trimming I do, even one fully charged battery won't do it. Also, pay attention to the power setting. If you run it at a higher power than needed, it shortens the run time. But it is fairly light for us "old" folks, and seems pretty robust.

My dad bought a battery B&D a couple of years ago when he couldn't manage a gas trimmer any longer. It worked fine for him and his small yard. I used it a week ago and it had plenty of power and was nice and light.

Well, as for this old man, I'm still of the opinion I'll use a corded electric trimmer, edger, etc. I've got plenty of extension cord, so I am able to reach as far as I need to.

I don't see having battery chargers taking up space in my shop, and most gas powered appliances get too cantankerous in time. Friened of mine felt the same way, but had more property. He solved that problem by buying a portable generator.

Well now, after the Hot/Crazy Matrix I'm just not sure what to make of this. I imagine a woman on the crazy side of the matrix with a string trimmer that doesn't run out of juice could inflict some major damage to the object of her insanity.

PERHAPS.................Therefore, when I contacted WORX last week, for parts, I also bought a two pack of replacement 24 volt batteries and some other offered accessories. Most of the time, I do my best to not antagonize her, being glad she likes the "yard work"...........gives me time to look for "stuff" 8) She also has three mowers and all I need to do is keep them sharp and gassed up :wink:

This guy is not like some of you "older" Rambos..no guns or any outdoor activities other than small yard maintenance. He is stooped and moves along in short,scuffing steps. :lol:
