There is a conspiracy of epic proportions that has kind of snuck up on us...maybe you've noticed it. Many items that use batteries nowadays require 3 batteries yet the batteries come in 2 or 4 packs (or more but always an even number). This is akin to the infamous hot dog / hot dog bun conspiracy! What to do...what to do?

Today at Best Buys I broke down and bought a box of 48 double AA batteries. It was right at $11. Last night I needed a small flashlight and all of them were dead or dim. These should be enough to outlast me!

Watch out for Kirkland AAs and AAAs. I used to buy batteries at Costco but recently I've had problems with them leaking. Two pair of my shooting muffs had corrosion in the battery compartment with batteries that hadn't been in them much more than a couple of months. They were always turned off when not in use.

I pretty much assumed most of the alkaline batteries were pretty much the same. I bought Costco Kirkland batteries for years, but over time I noticed that I had a lot of ruined flashlights, clocks, and remote controls. I won't buy that brand any more.

I’ve decided that Duracells are untrustworthy because of leakage problems, too. I’ve had them leak in the package before being used. I notice that they’re made in several places now, including china. Maybe that’s a clue as to the source of the problems.

I thought I was the only one who has had that problem with Duracell. I've had to switch to the Bunny in the last year.

I can't remember the last time only bought 2 or 4 batteries.
My coyote call uses---(wait for it)---11 AA batteries, 8 in the call and 3 in the remote. Now, one would think that as smart as all those designers must be, it wouldn't have been so tough to just make the remote use FOUR batteries.
The re-chargeable batteries I bought were more economical in packs of 8 so now I have 16 batteries with 11 in use. Guess I should have bought 24 --- two full sets for the call and a pair for my camera. AH-ha, now I have a plan-off to ebay to buy 8 more batteries.

Oh no, another snag in the plan. My charger only holds 8 batteries and it only charges in pairs and my camera doesn't use batteries as fast as the call and, and, and. Oh bother, what am I to do?

^ This is exactly what also happened to us. Costco batteries leaking into an expensive camera. Not fun trying to clean the corrosion out, and the camera was always turned off when it wasn't being used. We don't buy them either- Energizers are what we count on now, and have always had good luck with them.

I never put "house brand" batteries in expensive devices. I do use the "el-cheapo" batteries but only in the little "buck apiece" flashlites I carry constantly.

I’ve had every brand of battery leak at one time or another. Could be where they are made or just the nature of the beast.

Same with buying pre-packages screws/bolts/nuts....they are always an odd number!

Hotdogs...why not just a 4 pack and 4 pack of buns for just 2 people?

I've always thought that the packages of bolts and nuts not matching in number of items was a ploy to make you buy the extra bag. The only good thing about it is that it does build up the 'junk drawer' supply pretty well. It is nice that most of the big stores like Lowes, Home Depot, Ace and such usually have small hardware stuff in bulk so you can get the number of things you want.

Buy three four-packs and be able to change the batteries four times . . . or three two-packs for two changes.

And kids in high school say “I’ll never use algebra, why do we need to learn it”. 8)
