Basic 9mm

I have been considering the basic P-95 9mm for self defense and general home protection. I have not seen any bad reports on this pistol so I am assuming it is just a basic, good functioning 9mm?
I hope that the "Ruger Standard" of quality and price point applies!
Anyone have experience with this gun?

I was deciding between the P95 and the SR9. The feel of the P95 was just a little awkward in my hand. The SR9, however, had good ergonomics and felt great, just more natural IMO

Yea I have some nice single actions (CAS type and Cap and ball) and due to the current "Social Conditions" I feel the need for a larger capacity semi-auto . I have always trusted Ruger to shoot every time so I think the P-95 ought to fill the bill! I know the 9mm is not as powerfull as the .357, but it has proven itself through both Martial and Police service.
Accuracy with the basic 3 dot sights should be more than adequate. I look forward to owning the P95 and plan on shooting the heck out of it!

Make sure you don't pay too much ... they were selling a year or so ago for $259 brand new from CDNN. THey're gone now, but you should still be able to find one for well under $300.

I'd do a search in our classifieds for one (New or used). No worries buying used if in good shape with a 95.

The P95's that Rev mentions were closeout Decock Only models when Ruger discontinued them. They were 259/Blued and 289/SS. That was a great deal but ended in late 2007 as I bought some of their last ones in Dec 2007. I see new SS P95's for 339-389 in my area but they are Safety models. I am partial to the DC only models and they can still be found new and used if you look online, pawn shops, used gun shops, etc. If you need the accessory rail that is on the current model you will have to look a little harder for a Decock Only model as they were only configured that way for a very short time[2 years max]. The non textured/non railed DC only models were made for 10 years so you will find them pretty easy. There was even a DAO model offered in the non railed/textured early model if DAO interests you at all.

Which ever model you end up with the P95 is a very solid design. Many consider it to be the ultimate evolution of the Ruger P series 9mm. Good luck and let us know what you end up with!

It's a very uneventful pistol..It goes bang each and every time. It will shoot all brands of 9mm and ask for more.
Get the de-cock model. The trigger pull length in DA is enough of a safety.

My wife took my P95 for home use. She doesnt care for my Glocks and the P85MkII is "Too Big".

If one was so inclined..which Im not, you rarely even have to clean it.

Great pistol.
Excellent pistol for the price.
accurate enough for most shooters.

If you can get a new blued P95 for $350 or less you are doing well. I love mine. It is more accurate than I can shoot it, has never malfunctioned in my hands, and I have 5000+ rounds through it.

I will say that I like my SR9 better, but the $100 difference will buy you 500 rounds of 9mm to practice with. Something to consider.

My P95 is one of my "cold, dead hands" guns.

the gun is a boring gun....it is reliable, rugged, and lightweight all at the same time.....i use mine as a home defense gun....it is a little bulky to carry concealed.....but could be done if you have a great holster for it.
Mine is safety model...$339 dollars stainless steel.
They seem trouble free compared to the SR9's which are more money?The decocker only models are hard to find,i've only seen one for sale.

What every body else said.... Ruger has spent years selling the P95 and have made pretty much a perfect 9mm semi-auto. Not compact but a reliable handgun.

For years I thought I was a revolver guy... but I really like 9mm semi-autos... but to be specific the P-95. I'm sure the SR9s are just fine, I've never taken the no hammer step.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I seriously debated the P95 and SR9, rented both and went with the 95. There is nothing I dislike about this gun and everyone who shoots it can't believe how good it is. I got it out the door at my local gun shop for $325.

290-350 is about what the P95s that I have see around here go for. Its a good deal at 350 and its a better deal at anything less. I shot a p95 a while back and I liked it even more than I like my P85.

The local shop sells the stainless P-95 for $329 (plus tax).

They are probably the best value in the market for a 9mm service-size pistol. Mine have been problem free.

All the ney-sayers out there that shoot Glock,XD,M&P or whatever this week's flavor is all agree...you can't go wrong with a P95. They may not say much about or care to say anything at all but they never have a bad thing to say about it. Mine absolutely rocks! It's a pistol that gets better everytime you shoot it.

I opted for the SR9 and have been very happy with it. It's thinner than a Glock which makes for easy concealment and goes bang when expected making holes in targets pretty close to where I thought they would go. It's been very accepting of various commercial ammo as well as my handloads in various configurations. Ergonomics are great for me, I really like the slim grip. It was hard to believe at first that this slim pistol could go bang 18 times. On the other hand the $100 premium over the P95 is a factor.

Easy there JSL .... the P95 is an OK combat gun, but from an accuracy point of view, almost any of the above guns you mention will blow it away. They typically have minute-of-paper-plate accuracy at 25 yards ... which is good enough for shooting an attacker in the chest at 7 yards or so, but doesn't say much for playing at the range when shooting against your buddies with M&Ps, Glocks, Sigs, CZs, Springfields, and 1911's.

A P-95 would come in dead last against the above guns, given the same shooter skills.
