AVIATOR SURPREME

Fabulous!

I once watched a hawk or vulture of some sort give his or her kids soaring lessons, including stall and recovery--over and over, until they could all do it smoothly. It was amazing.

I have one fat little Rufous hummingbird who is the boss over the feeders, his aerial combat flying is absolutely amazing, he can go from a high speed dive into a flared out hover like a Harrier jet and then right back to Mach 2 acceleration chasing off other hummers from the feeders. We also have one bigger sized gray colored hummingbird who is so loud when he does his approach to the feeders. He made a cross wind high speed turn and to a hover and his wings popped the air like helicopter blades.
I watched two small Anna's hummers eating a buffalo gnat swarm, mouths wide open gathering them in every pass they made on the swarm, voracious feeding frenzy

Hi,

Great pictures, Frank! I can't get clear open shots of my guys cuz of the foliage and such, but do watch those maneuvers almost every day.

And Rufus, my resident male rufous hummingbird, is just like Don's. He'll take on the bigger Anna's birds two at a time, and even tries to chase me away from the feeder when I've forgotten to fill it at night when he's asleep. He doesn't like me interrupting his morning routine, I guess!

The ONLY kind around here are the Ruby Throat. They are aggressive little critters. Watched one male drop into the rhododendron bush next to the feeder and lay in wait till another bird came by then he attacked and then scooted back into the bush and lay in wait again. This went on for almost 30 minutes. NOTHING went to that feeder while he was there.
