How do I add an avatar to my profile, it's disappeared?

It sounds like it's no longer hosted on the site you had it on.

Make sure you have a tiny picture less than 125 x 125 pixels hosted somewhere like Photobucket.
Go to 'user control panel' in the top right next to search.
Go to 'profile' and you should see 'add or edit avatar'.
Put a link to your picture there - presto, you have an avatar.

One cannot ever tell, with regards to pic-hosting websites.
I've had one pic-hosting website (villagephotos.com) go out of business/shut down, disappearing all my pics there; and another (imageshack.com) that changed from a free pic-hosting website to a pay-to-play website (when I didn't pay, all my pics there got disappeared).
Also, even one of the more popular pic-hosts (photobucket.com) has a sofware glitch every now & then - most likely because they're "improving" their website's software.
