Astroturf on the gun range

It's been a couple months, now, but one of the pistol ranges at my gun range, has some old astro turf laid down on top of the grass. It's actually pretty nice. There must have been some local high school that got some new astro turf for their football field.

Like I said, it has been a few months now, and slowly the area between the shooters and the targets is getting smoother and smoother. It makes it really nice to pick up brass from semi autos. Plus, you can see the horizontal red line. That is the 20 yard line. There is another at 10 yards. The whole range is 25 yards long. So marking the distances is lots more visible with the astro turf.

And this ammo shortage...let me tell ya. I used to be able to pick up 3 or 4 pounds every time I went to the range. Today, it was just a couple handfuls. As well, people just aren't coming to the range. We have a sign in book, and I was the first person there today at 10am, and there was absolutely no one shooting on Saturday...I was the first person since Friday. Amazing.

In this picture, you can see the berm behind the targets. Behind that is a 50 or 75 yard AR rifle range. Obviously both ranges can't be used at the same time. This range is used mostly for the guy that does the qualifications for the concealed carry classes. But I like it because on Sundays hardly anyone is out at the range.

Great idea, need to get some to replace the grass. No more mowing or watering here in the desert in Boise. Will really save on the water bill. I wonder how it will work for weed control when landscaping.

Well, if you want, but I don’t think it makes great grass replacement for a house. One house on the route I walk my dogs has fake grass for their front lawn, it looks really, really terrible.

My backyard is now covered in used sports turf. I live in Colorado but the used turf is from Texas. Apparently there's a significant market for used turf as the guy I bought it from is out of Texas but he has partners all over the USA storing and loading it. He has the equipment to pull up old turf, remove 70% of the crumbled rubber and make 10'x80' rolls that weigh 1000lbs.

My dog destroyed my backyard. Dog-proof grass isn't able to grow here in Colorado, used sports turf is the solution. My daughter was looking for a rental house and told me the hot ticket in rentals is a maintenance free yard. My front yard is low water bushes and shredded wood chips. I like to have fun on my time off, yard work isn't fun for me.

Weeds can't make it through the turf I bought. Weeds are about the only thing that grow here in Eastern Colorado on the high desert and the turf stops them. All I do to my back yard is water the tree and pick up the dog poop

Some friends of mine, in New Mexico, had a modern house with sliding patio doors. To reduce the bright afternoon glare, they put a reflective film, or coating, on those doors. And when their grass withered and died, they put down artificial grass in their back yard.

Yep, you guessed it! The sun, reflecting off those patio doors, burned up their artificial grass!

We could use that here. Our gun club is situated in the sand hills north of town. The ranges are scrubby grass, sandburs, and (mostly) fine sand. Brass has to be cleaned carefully.
