In another thread here, CaryC stated he was of the argumentative type. Had an uncle that would argue. Loved a good argument.

My uncle, my Dad's older brother, was a newspaperman, maybe an editor, for the Charleston, WV Gazette and a World War I veteran. His son told me of witnessing an argument between his dad and another man.

The two had argued maybe half and hour, and Uncle Maynard had backed his opponent into a corner from which there was no escape. Finally, my uncle said, "Look, there's no way you can win this argument. Let's swap around, you take my position, and I'll take yours, and we'll continue."

They did, and Uncle Maynard came out on top!

Uncle Maynard must have been pretty clever. It’s not easy to win both sides of an argument!

I used to look for and enjoy a good argument. Then I realized nobody else enjoyed it.

I used to look for and enjoy a good argument. Then I realized nobody else enjoyed it.

I stopped arguing when I realized I didn't have to have the last word and that my opinion rarely changed as a result of arguing. So why bother? Life has been inherently better since then.

Hi,

I didn't go to law school, but a high percentage of folks in the political science dept at our university did. One of my profs acted like we all would, and we spent a lot of time doing that same "back and forth" exercise. It was very valuable, even without any law school attached.

"Know thy self, know thy enemy" is one very old variant, from this fellow named Sun Tzu.

My late mother in law said I was her favorite son in law because I was the only one willing to argue with her. I told her I kept in good practice arguing with her daughter. I mess them both.

That’s pretty neat... I heard that on an LP, in the ‘70’s!
