News reports coming across that basketball star Kobe Bryant has died along with four others in a helicopter crash.
Hope it is not factual.

Initial reports include the daughters, later reports do not.
 
It's true. Some reports say that one of his daughters was with him. My prayers go out to his family all all who loved him.

I wasn't going to post it because of all the negative BS that's sure to follow.
 
If I were a professional athlete or musician, I wouldn't even go NEAR an aircraft. :shock:
 
ESPN says now his 13 year old daughter was on the chopper too; along with another parent and his/her child.

Seems Kobe was coaching the team these kids were on.
 
Saw Kobe play when he was in high school, I’ve seen a dozen or so future NBA players in their high school days and he was certainly the best I ever saw. He then went on to do the work necessary to become one of the greatest NBA players ever.
 
I’ve read a report that he was piloting the chopper, and that one of his daughter’s teammates was with a parent along on board when the accident occurred.

We'll let the professionals investigate, see what they find out. Someone suggested to me that it might have been a collision with a drone.
 
The NTSB isn't on site yet.

Some report that mountain was hidden behind dense fog in the area.

Yikes ..... now they say a total of 9 were aboard. :(

Hi,

So true! I was at a club trap shoot this morning, and yes, there was a deep marine layer that lasted until about noon when the sun started breaking thru. The crash was reported on somebody's smart phone while we waited for our turn on the field, and I wouldn't have wanted to be flying yet when that first news came thru.

After checking a few sources to make sure the story was being repeated elsewhere, I sent a note to a friend with three sons who play basketball. She was working, away from news casts, and sent a note back. Essentially she said she and Kobe were the same age, and this kind of news will really sober one up. I think it does regardless of one's age.

I'm not a basketball fan, but there was always something about Kobe that appealed to me. A LOT of people are going to miss him tremendously. RIP, Kobe.

I wonder at the thousands and thousands, if not millions, of miles he spent on airplanes. Then a helicopter got him. Truly sad.

Payne Stewart, Thurman Munson, Alan Kulwicki, Davey Allison and other famous sports people who flew a lot also perished in aviation related accidents as well....

Hi,

One story I found has links to info on the helicopter itself, among other things. Kobe lived in Orange County, a two hour drive to Staples Center in LA where the Lakers play their home games, and only a 15 minute helicopter ride. So he "commuted" by helicopter from home to Staples. Apparently that mode of transport had become almost a trademark with him. And the same helicopter he was in today was the chopper he'd flown in who knows how many times over the years.

And they talked about this being one of the helicopters owned by the State of Illinois which was sold off a few years back to put some cash into their coffers. They also said it was NOT owned by Kobe. I didn't see anything about whether today's pilot was also his "regular" pilot... I'm sure we'll hear all kinds of things and maybe learn one or two as the investigation proceeds.

A long, long time ago I spent a fair amount of time in helicopters. Not because I had to but mostly to break the boredom and cool off from the oppressive Vietnam heat. But after one almost fatal incident, and the statement from the crash investigator, I thought twice about going on those things when I didn't have to. He said "planes want to fly, helicopters want to crash". In the years since I have mostly successfully avoided being in a helicopter, but hardly hesitate about flying even in small aircraft. People have too much faith in those things and think it will never happen to them.

RIP Kobe.
 
I used to be a Spurs fan and "hated" him because he was so good. In the 2003 conference c-ship,the Spurs beat them out there...finally.

He was one of the best to play the game.

RIP,and I hope all loved ones will find some consolation and comfort.
 
He volunteered for The Make-Wish Foundation, The Boys and Girls Club of America, and NBA Cares. He was not the typical self-centered sports star and did a lot for kids.
 
I know it's bad to speculate but after listening to the ATC tape, looking at the route,
and where the crash was, I gotta go with the pilot.
I'm thinking the visibility was a lot worse than he was admitting to ATC.
( don't want to get nailed by the feds for VFR in IFR conditions or bust altitude
restrictions )
They already had to hold for a bit due to at least one missed approach by
another aircraft ( doubt that was a training miss ) and other aircraft doing
full IFR procedures.
I know the pressure is on pro pilots to get where they're supposed to be
on time, but sometimes you just have to go to plan B or C or...
