I shoot Winchester factory 38 "Winclean" ammo because it is so clean. In fact, I usually dont bother cleaning the gun when I get home if that was the only ammo fired that session. Now, Winchester is offering the Winlcean powder no. 244 for reloaders. I am curious to know just how clean it is when used with regular primers. The factory loads use a special uber clean primer in addition to the clean powder, but the primers aren't available to reloaders.

I believe that I have also noticed the flash holes are bigger with the 'Winclean' ammo. I don't reload those but I have heard of many people that have reloaded them without problems.

45 acp Superclean NT had bigger flash holes for sure. The old version of that ammo carried a disclaimer "not for personal protection, police or military use". Apparently the lead free primer is less reliable. I suspect those primers are the reason the fired cases come out shiny on the inside. Not a speck of debris or burnt carbon anywhere.

WinClean 244 is such a new powder, it may not even be on the shelves yet. I suspect it's a close cousin to CFE pistol. Data for 244 is in the latest Hodgdon's Annual Manual. Most reloaders are a strange lot, in that they stay with the powder that they have been using since 1972 and don't even notice new products. I try to be aware of new products when they are introduced. In other words, I'm not locked into Unique and 2400 as the only powders as they were in Elmer Keith's day. Dealers are not usually keen on stocking new powders when they can sell all of the older ones readily. There are over 150 canister powders available to reloaders and with 51 years of reloading experience, even I have not tried them all. CFE pistol, TrailBoss, TiteGroup, Power Pistol, Blue Dot, and H110/WW296 will cover most of my handgun needs. Bob!
