I would LIKE to have one of those.............. always thought that was a neat variation................
The main three differences between the early 22/45's (often called MkII) are:
1. Loaded chamber indicator was introduced with the MkIII
2. Magazine disconnect "safety" was introduced with the MkIII
3. The early MkIII 22/45's all had molded thin grips, noticeably thinner than the old style 22/45's. The RP model was introduced later and has the removable panels.
The tapered 5.25" heavy barrel is one of 10 models of early style 22/45's Ruger made.
A KP514 like yours sold on auction arms earlier this year for over $400.

A bit off topic here so I apologize but I was wondering.....
Does anyone know if the upper from my Zytel framed Mk II 22/45 4" bbl
will fit on the lower of a MK II steel standard lower/grip frame?

If it is a really early 22/45, maybe. But chances are, probably not. At some point Ruger started "peening" 22/45 lowers to improve upper to lower fit, making them not fit on the steel frame lowers.
There is no guarantee that uppers will swap between like models BTW.

I suspect that you are correct about the swapping of uppers to lowers.
There was no serious interest on my part in doing so, I just had a momentary
Franken-Ruger daydream. If I ever have one of each model apart at the same time, I will have a go at it.
One of the two MK II 22/45's that I own was made in 1995. That may not
be early enough.
