Another Single Six Question

As those of you that have read my other posts know I recently came across a vintage 1974 N/M Single six and I know nothing about revolvers.

So my brother-in-law, who has more revolver experience than I do, came over this weekend so I had to show off my new gun. He liked it, but said the cylinder (22 mag, numbers match) felt a little loose. I have no idea what it's supposed to feel like. The cylinder has a little play in it, but seems to shoot fine. Is this "play" normal, or is this something I should worry about?

A little play is fine. If it's too tight then it will bind up after fireing it a few times at the range. Of course too loose is not good either but it won't hurt anything.

If the numbers match, I wouldn't worry about it. If you notice a lot of flame/flash between the front of the cylinder and forcing cone (barrel) or notice little pieces of lead being shaved off THEN get it checked by a gunsmith. Otherwise shoot it and enjoy it.

I have found that brother in laws opinions are usually over rated...

Cock the gun & try to turn the cylinder radially back & forth. (Not axially) You should find it's 'gootentite'. There will be a very small amount of movement... There will also be a small amount of axial play, but that's necessary for the thing to work properly.

If you want to be surprised, pick up an old colt & repeat the exercise. Compared to your typical Ruger revolver, the Colts are slop-city!

Shoot heck out of it & enjoy! The Single Six is nearly indestructable.

I finally picked up a 22lr cylinder for this, so when it gets here hopefully it'll work with my gun, otherwise you'll see it for sale.

My .22 got put on hold for a week at a UPS distribution center, 60 miles away, because UPS thought it might be a gun...and the darn shipping place that had handled my package transfer to them, hadn't given me a tracking #, so I had no idea. :twisted:

UPS ain't the BATF!

They opened it up to check, agreed that it was disabled, approved ground shippment, and it's back on its way.

This gun has been so much fun since day one, that I'll never sell it!

Too much sentimental value already! :roll:
