Another reloading question...

I have been loading 9mm Luger. Been using some 125gr cast lead bullets. Seems there is some residual lead around the bullet at the mouth of the case. A shaving if you will is the best I can describe it. I have been peeling it off but I know I shouldn't have to do it. Is this possibly from not having enough flair or is it the crimp? Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance. -Rob

Run your flair deeper, If takes more flair on A lead bullet.

Hi,

Get out the mic and check your bullets, too. Normally lead bullets run 0.001" larger diameter (.356" for the 9mm) than jacketed (.355") from most mfrs and molds. But they may come out bigger, too: I have a Lee TL mold that regularly throws .357" using straight wheelweights.

If you're normally set up for jacketed bullets, the advice to increase the flair is especially important to pay attention to when you move to lead...

Thanks Rick. I actually measured the bullets prior to starting the reloading process. They were on the money. I'm going run the flair a little deeper and try that.

Don't get too crazy on the flare, just enough to easily start the bullet, no more. Shouldn't look like the business end of a trumpet! Your case life will thank you... :lol: :wink:

Agreed: the 9mm can be a bit problematic in "how much is enough, how much goes too far" IME. Think that's cuz it actually has a little more taper to it than appears to the naked eye.

I like to set the flare for that caliber to allow a touch more bullet to sit inside the case than I use on some others (perhaps 1/8" max?) I try to achieve enough the bullet sits squarely in the case on its own.

This seems to help the bullet seat more evenly and w/ less pressure. Also helps eliminate the "snake swallowing a gopher" appearance when using those slightly larger bullets I mentioned, too.

I have a 44 mag case that made it through the press with a 45 slug in it. Perfect description.

I just kept adjusting a little at a time and now it looks to be where it needs to be. Cartridges look perfect coming out of the press now. Thanks a lot guys, appreciate is very much!
