Anyone noticed the prices starting to climb? Bought a box of Federal 325 count 22lr this morning at Wal Mart for 19.97 a box. With tax came out to be 21.32. About a week ago paid 15.92 tax included.

That's about the same increase I've seen for fed out here (though our prices were a bit higher to start with). I've seen the largest increases with CCI and the lowest increases with Eley.

Yeah....not unusual. After all, inflation marches on, and we are in the beginning of the 3rd quarter of the year, eh?
I suspect that supply 'n demand is also a big factor.....and that a certain amount of greed could be thrown into the mix. I mean, when ya think about it, how long can one reasonably expect a retailer to continue watching it's merchandise being bought and resold on a secondary market at a 2X-3X profit without eventually wanting a bigger piece of the pie too?
Oh BTW....the price of (paper)oil is presently sitting at over $100 a barrel (while being leveraged at about 10/1)....so, then there's that....and....the "dollar" is presently "down" (whatever that actually means)....and....it's a known fact that the buying power of our so-called "dollar" has steadily-shrunk to the point that it's now only worth 3 cents (or less) of it's original "value".....so...
when I put all that together, what I'm seeing is that ammo prices aint ever going to be back where they were before this latest panic/hoarding/gouging episode started.
Looking at the brighter side though;
I've noted that the bottom has all but fallen out of the private gouging-market of late, meaning that prices on SOME calibers of privately-offered ammo is down....significantly....meaning, down to the point that SOME "good" brands of SOME calibers can actually be bought much cheaper through my local "for sale" boards than what it sells for at Walmart, Academy, or from ANY of the big online dealers.
What I'm taking away from that is that there aint but so much gouging that can be done before the gougers/speculators AND the panic-buyers max-out their cash resources and/or credit cards, the natural result of which will sooner or later result in lower 'n lower prices because the buyers stop buying and the gougers have to either cut prices or get stuck sitting on it....which is exactly what I see happening in my neck of the woods.

What I do know though, is that prior to the last "panic", Winchester and Federal .556 ball was right around $9.95 per box. The last time I actually seen either for sale at Walmart was a couple of weeks ago and at that time, it was marked $12.27 per box of 20, which with the tax, comes to about .65 per round. That's a 6 month increase of over 25%, eh?
On the other hand, I've more-recently bought a few thousand rds of the equivalent Federal/Lake City .556 ball for .47 per round...and...it came on 10-strippers AND in USGI ammo cans that are worth $15 each these days by themselves.....so....
....which is "normal"?.....the old "pre-panic" price, the new Walmart price, or the price I can find it at out here in the untaxed, unlicensed, no-overhead, free-market world...or will the new normal be somewhere in the middle?
I'm asking that with all due respect, because at this particular point in time, I can't answer it myself.
All that said though, I'm still betting that we'll never see ammo at the "pre-panic" price that it was at two business-quarters ago. Reason is....IMO, we was about due for a price increase anyway....because....like rust, inflation never sleeps.

I have no idea what normal may be and/or been, but I bought two 20-rd boxes of Tula 7.62x39 at Wal-Mart today for $5.99/box. That is the best price I have seen in 6+ months...most shops want $8-9 per 20rd box.
That was all that was on the shelf...3 box per day per person .
Federal .30/30 was $16.99/box (20-rds)...didn't buy it, was looking for my son. He thought he could do better (I think what he meant was that I could reload some for him).

I had old oatmeal cans with 30/30 brass kicking around in my garage long before I even had a 30/30 just cause I thought they were cool. My current all around fun load is a cast 173gr fn at about 1400 fps at a cost of 5-9 cents per round depending on what lead I use. For extra umph, add the cost of a GC and 4 more cents of powder, and the same pill will go about 2200 fps and would work in just about any situation I'd care to take a 30/30 into.
