The LGS had a compact model this morning... it was tempting even though I don't shoot HMR any more.

True.. and my stash of premium .22WMR is slowly dwindling...

You are such an enabler!

ammo is plentiful.....
Now... but if you'll recall, it's still been one of the last calibers to come back. From now on, rimfires will be the first thing to disappear every time something happens. Even if one doesn't hand-load themselves, it's still best to stick with centerfire for varminting because the mere option is a deterrent to long-term scalping. I already had .22LR guns before this insanity started, but I'm not buying anymore rimfire chambers.

There is something really fishy about this "rimfire ammo shortage", and the explanations so far haven't made sense to me. Even with all the scalping going on, etc. etc., I just don't understand why production hasn't been increased to a level to satisfy the demand. I've never been a government conspiracy kind of guy, but this situation is starting to push me to that kind of thinking.

There's an issue with ammo that kind of crept-up on us, and it has to do with the way it's sold.

I'm just old enough to remember a time when rounds were dispersed over a wide variety of LGSs, feed-stores, hardware-stores, drug-stores... etc, etc (same goes for guns themselves). Nowadays, it's mainly through a much smaller number of large retailers. This consolidation has provided better selection, the convenience of one-stop shopping, and lower prices, but it has also made it easier for try-hards and scalpers to clamp down on the overall supply.

As for manufacturing capacity, that's not going up by much anytime soon because everyone knows the scare has to end sometime.

As for blaming the gubment, well... sort of. Obama makes a few grandstanding comments to his base and everyone runs for Cabelas; so technically, it's half our-fault as well. This is somewhat ironic with regards to .17HMR/.17WSM given that they are almost exclusively used in non-autoloading firearms and are unlikely to be affected by anything short of an outright ban of all guns; but from now on, expect these rounds to be scalped for scalping's sake because they can't be reloaded.

Let's not help this morph into another (yet another) ammo conspiracy thread...
Here's the thing - if you want to have some later, you have to buy some now. In times of shortage, the only ones going without are the ones who didn't plan ahead (and take appropriate action).
My kids (and hopefully the grandkids) will be adequately-supplied ammo-wise, if I have anything to do with it. And the Ruger American rimfires to use!
- Kinda wish sometimes that my Grandfather had put back a few of those new-fangled S&W "357 Magnum" revolvers for me! 8)

Picked up 500 rounds of HMR ammo this morning at the LGS. It was the only rimfire ammo they had, but they had a good supply (CCI, Hornady and Winchester).

May go back tomorrow for another 500.
