Single-Sixer
I would like to get a no.1 before July this year. I do not know what exactly I want to hunt with it, but I do want a No.1. Any suggestions on what caliber to look at?
Advice for 1st No.1?

What do you want to hunt with it? I see you are in South Africa, so there are lots of options.

My first choice would be a 30 - 06. Factory ammo from 110 to 220 grains and now with a wide range of custom bullets.

.30-06 is the most flexible I suppose... I'm primarily a deer hunter so I prefer 25 and 26 bores.
Luckily there is a No. 1 for everything, whether you want sights or not, laminate/stainless, or blued/walnut, from .204 Ruger to .45/70, there is a No. 1!

as mentioned it really depends on what you want to do with it. 30-06, 7mag 375 H&H 9.3x74 ammo is all easy to get in South Africa I presume.
If you want one just for fun and to shoot a 243 1A or 22-250 1B would be hard to beat

6.5x55 Swede, 7mm-08, .260 Rem, or .308/7.62, all depending on ammo availability where you live. While these are not considered dangerous game calibers, they'll do for just about anything else. They're among the greatest cartridges ever developed, and I hope I don't get hammered for saying that.

The 7mm and 30 caliber would be the most versitile. However, for going hunting where there is dangerous game a 375, 416, or 458 magnum would make a better choice. If you do not reload your own ammo, now would be a good time to start learning. Buy a reloading manual from Speer, Hornady, or one of the others, and read up on the cartridges before you buy. There are many books out there. Educate yourself! 8)

A lot of dangerous game has been taken with flintlock and caplock, and most of those were single shot blackpowder rifles. Further, even with modern repeaters, hunters sometimes get maimed or killed when hunting or facing dangerous game. Many a hunter has reggretted being under gunned. 8)

You should talk to an outfitter. Follow their advice. If it were me, it would be a .375 H&H. No issues with factory ammunition and if you load your own, lots of range available with bullets and velocities.
But then I'm biased. I have one and took it to Alaska for a moose hunt. It performed admirably. My backup had a .416 Remington Mag bolt rifle. I'm not stupid.
I backed him up with the single shot. Unnecessary on both moose.

I have several of these fine rifles in calibers ranging from .22 Hornet to .458 Mag. My all time favorite is my .30-06 1A. Accurate, hard hitting, and elegant. I have a 1B in this caliber, too. Tough to go wrong with an '06.

I would be primarily concerned with the quality of wood (stock). I don't know what you intend to shoot at in the Rep. S.A. but I would imagine any thing between .22-250 to .375 H&H plus would fit in some how. Surprisingly, the tiny .22-.250 if used sensibly with good game bullets (limited by the 1-14 twist) is a good game killer and the .375 H&H is a classic. Can you buy .375 Ruger magnum ammo in S.A.?

I have been shooting a friend's #1 in 300 wetherby mag for a while now. It is a very hard hitting gun. With a good recoil pad and a magnaported barrel it doesn't kill u to shoot it either. I think its a cartridge that could be used from light to dangerous game.

I think I would prefer a 45-70 even though my first was in 22-250. The 45-70 is just made for a single shot and fun to cast bullets for. I guess since I am a big revolver guy that influences my tastes a bit.
