A nice find

I was looking for one more birdshead gun to use the grip frame off of to complete another project I am working on. But...I just can't mess with this gun....I was looking it over today and I noticed that the Ruger warning crap was hidden underneath the ejector housing. This must have been one of their clean up guns with such a late serial number of 58-99xxx. I picked it up for a super deal from one of our members.

My notes say less than 100 made up with the 'warning' under the barrel as part of the 'clean up' run! :shock:
Hmmm... mine is 58-99088 just 86 ser. numbers lower than yours - I may have the low and you may have the high ser. no. of these. :shock:

I like them. Mine is 99078. Wears a Bisley hammer now and eventually I will fit a OM SBH cylinder rechambered in a tight .45 Colt. It is my tractor tool box gun and takes a beating. Also delivers a beating when shooting with full Ruger only loads. Still, one of my favorite guns. Had Alan Harton fix up a .32 H&R that looks just like it only with real CCH instead of the rust bucket Ruger paint.

do you mean with birdshead grip or less than 100 in general with warning info on bottom of barrel under ejector? I have 2 Blackhawk convertibles I haven't had either very long and both were bought new .1st a 6.5 inch 357/9mm ser#38-28xxx and the 2nd is a 45lc/45acp with 4 5/8 barrel ser#48-64xxx and both have safety warning info on bottom under ejector I just thought that's how they were doing them all now ??

Sorry for the confusion - less than 100 Blued / CCH, .45LC, 3 1/2" Bird's Head (original large frame) Vaqueros with the 'warning' under the barrel (rather than on the side), late (post 2005) production "clean up" guns.

(Original) Vaquero production officially ceased in 2005 with the introduction of the smaller New Vaquero. About 2,000 various models of (original larger frame) Vaqueros have shown up in distribution channels since. Chad started using the term 'clean up' guns when the first ones appeared on the premise that there were some left over (original) Vaquero large frames laying around the factory. I might go along with that (use up left over parts) except for the .44 mag. runs (about 1,200 guns) which I speculate were actually made up on a distributor's request since the New Vaquero is too small (strength issue - not a dimension issue) for the .44 mag.
My speculations - Ruger is very closed mouth about production issues.

Nope! I like it. Someday I'll drop it off with Alan for real CCH. It was my project gun the first time I took the NRA summer course on single actions with Hamilton Bowen. It has my first action job and a freespin job done with a set screw to hold the pawl back, done under the teacher's watchful eye. Wouldn't want to burden some unsuspecting soul with my version of kitchen table gunsmithing, albeit with Mr. Bowen looking over my shoulder.
