My mother's older sister, my Aunt Della, and her husband were sharecroppers down around Oxford, Mississipi. The lived in weathered two story house near Paris, MS. The upper floor had only one room floored and ceiled, the rest of the area was open joists with no flooring. The house was built in the "dog trot" style, with the front door opening into a full length hall. To the right as one entered the hall, was the living room, dining room, and kitchen. On the left were three bedrooms. The house had electrc lights, but no running water. About 1951 or '52, when I was about fourteen or so, we, my Mom, Dad, and I, drove down for a visit.
On Sunday morning there was no church service that weekend. And Dad always wanted a morning paper, especially on Sunday. Papers were sold at a nearby general store, about a quarter of a mile up the road. So, the three of us "men" walked up to the store.
My mother and aunt were still doing the breakfast dishes, when my mother heard my footsteps coming down the hall. My mother could identify each of us children by our footsteps. She remarked to my aunt, "Robert must have decided not to go with them."
She walked to the door to see me, and there was no one there! She remarked to my aunt, "I thought sure that was Robert coming down the hall.."
My aunt's reply: "Oh, we hear that all the time."
