Hey Guys,
I have read a lot of books in my life and this one is at the top of my list. It is an unbelievable story about Louie Zamperini. He was an Olympic runner, he could have been the first to run the 4 min. mile, WWII pilot and a survivor of 47 days on a raft in the Pacific after crashing in a B-24. Then spent almost 3 years in a Jap prison receiving the torture that we can not imagine and close to death several times. He also became an inspiration to many while a POW and in later life.
A movie will be out Christmas Day. It looks very good from watching the trailer. The movie can NO WAY show the hardships and torture he went through.
With all the Torture in the news this is a very good time to read the book or see the movie for folks to see what REAL torture is all about. Hillenbrand’s book describes, among other things, treatment that included prisoners being “beaten, burned, stabbed or clubbed to death, shot, beheaded, killed during medical experiments or eaten alive in ritual acts of cannibalism.” "Anyone who refutes the overall horrific treatment of Allied prisoners by the Japanese during the war is not being honest with themselves, or they don’t know their history,"
He was tormented by prison guard Mutsuhiro Watanabe (nicknamed "The Bird"), who was later included in General Douglas MacArthur's list of the 40 most wanted war criminals in Japan. Held at the same camp was then-Major Greg "Pappy" Boyington, and in his book, Baa Baa Black Sheep, he discusses Zamperini and the Italian recipes Zamperini would write to keep the prisoners' minds off the food and conditions. Zamperini had at first been declared missing at sea, and then, a year and a day after his disappearance, KIA. When he eventually returned home he received a hero's welcome.
