9mm powder

Got my hands on several thousand primed Starline 9mm. Want to not use the old dirty (1994) Unique on hand. (saving them for .45lc) Suggestions for a new powder or should we stay wth Unique new cleaner powder. Buddy found 14000 cases and split them wth me.

I've been using CFE-Pistol lately and have become very fond of this powder with 124 gr jacketed bullets.

Several powders will work in your 9mm, Win 231, WST, Titegroup, Universal will all work great, as will several others.

Closest place didn't have any of these powders. They must be popular. I'll try next place tomorrow. My buddy got 23,000 primed cases, had to correct that.st

I have used AA5 and Universal in the 9MM and found both to be quite satisfactory. 8)

I was going to say - if you decide to stick with Unique, I hope you have better luck finding it where you are. I have not seen a pound of Unique in any store around here for a couple of years. I've switched to Power Pistol and HS-6 for my 9mm loads.

I just pulled the seal on my last keg (1994) of Unique loading some frangible 9's I had!
I have loved Unique, Bullseye and WW296 for so many years. They have served me well. Now with the extra semi-auto shooting with this new group I want to stay away from the "old" dirty Unique in semis. We are shooting a lot for a single session. Plenty of powder at the gun shows to be had. Like I said, I'm going to reserve this ......partial..... last keg of Unique for the 45LC.
I can get new cleaner burning Unique, is there any advantage using Tightgroup or CFE? Research suggest little difference, I want to hear opinions from users about flow consistency (I use a lee auto disk for pistol) and groups. My 9mm loads vary from 90gr frangible to 124gr HP's.
Please tell me what you like and why, I am wide open to your experiences.

I'm still loading with my worn out 1976 SPEER edition, the one with hand written notes on so many pages.
Time to embrace the innovations in powder, perhaps.

I just put together some .45acp loads with CFE pistol. I was very pleased with the way it metered through the Dillon measure on my SDB. I didn't have more than 1/10gr variation when loading 6grs and 8 of the 10 loads I weighed were dead on.
I can't help with accuracy because I haven't shot any groups on paper yet, but when checking for functioning in my guns, I didn't have any problem consistently smacking 10" steel plates, out to 30yds, on my backyard range.

I'll be loading 9mm with CFE shortly.

I've been shooting Unique for over 50 years & I'll never be without it, no matter how dirty it is. Its just one of the most useful powders out there for about every caliber. I can clean my gun from time to time & I have a lot of Unique. But, I also shoot a great deal of WST & 231, both burn cleaner & I've used many lbs. of both but Unique just covers a lot of ground in about any handgun caliber.
Lately I've started shooting quite a bit of Longshot & HS6 in different calibers & both work just fine in the 9mm. I buy whatever I can to stay ahead of the game since its kind of touch & go the last few years.

When I started loading pistol, only 3 powders were on my shelf all made by Hercules Powder Co. (now Alliant). These powders were Bullseye, Unique, and 2400; used for target, normal, and magnum loads respectively. Today all 3 powders still sit on my shelf, but the only one of those I use is Unique since there is so many newer and better powders out there. Still suggest trying CFE-Pistol powder. JMHO.

I'm using the new cleaner burning Unique for .380 ACP and 9MM and Bullseye for .45 ACP.

It is cleaner and you use the same amount of powder as with the old.

I've tried the CFE in a variety of calibers, 38, 357 and 41. It seems to be a nice powder. I have never seen a pound of unique for sale so I don't know what you mean by dirty. I guess carbon fouling? CFE didn't have that as far as I could see.

I also like HS-6, like SixShot said. I went back to the store and they didn't have anymore, so I bought some W296. Both good all around powders.

I like true blue , blue dot , and power pistol. Last batch of 147's i loaded with true blue were darn near one holers offhand at 15 yards with the sig 229.

The old version of Unique was very dirty burning. The new is much cleaner. I can still get Unique in the new formula. It is a very good all around powder. Of the powders I have been offered or suggested, none have any advantage over Unique.
Even with the old Unique it performs very well, just dirty. I am going to try a few newer powders as suggested. As posted, newer Unique is still a great powder and I might just stick with it cause it works. Gonna give some others a chance before stocking up on new Unique. I might find something better. I have been offered several pounds of HS6 to try.
Until I find something better I am going to try to use up the rest of the old formula Unique for range sessions, still got close to 8 pounds of it.

Got to update again bud got 43000 9mm cases from an ammo factory shut down. They are new brass resized primed and ready to go. Sure glad he's sharing. :mrgreen:
After looking hard might just stay wth Unique.

For top end performance I've used Longshot.

Several years back I replaced Unique with Universal Clays. Ain't looked back.

There are powders that do specific things better than Unique but nothing that does more things, at an acceptable level.
If I was limited to only one powder, it would probably be Unique.

So would I but then again I use it to load 20 Gauge as well as all my handgun rounds.

AA#7 was designed for 9mm and I've had excellent results with it. Meters well, good load density, and seems as accurate as the average 9mm pistol capabilty.

That would depend on what bullet weight you plan on using

Once I use the old formula Unique I am considering others. Unique, Bullsye and Bluedot and WW296 are old friends.
Midway had a deal on 9mm 95gr, Federal JSP. I ordered 2k. I plan on using Bluedot around 10gr., providing it performs well.
99.99% of my 9mm shooting is at paper, with rounds that are suited to self defense. My reloading manual suggests the new 95gr load will come in around 1400fps, with 400 muzzle energy.
I am going to stick to the mentioned powders above. They work and no reason to fix it. All are easily attainable around here, as well as the stock I now have that needs to be used.
After much research, I can find no reason to change powders.

Turns out no new powder offers any significant advantage over what I am using now, in my opinion.
