I have a 1990 made 77rsi in 250 savage that has a black recoil pad. Wondering why that is. Have been told that it's not correct, but it hasn't been messed with. Any info appreciated.

Later ones had black pads, I believe.

I suspect Ruger merely had a temporary supplier issue that probably, knowing 'ol Bill, saved them 30 cents per pad for a short while. 
Then back to the regular red pads...

Or, they were left over from whatever was found in a corner of the Newport plant (yep...the parts bin theory again).
