77/357 quality

I sold my 77/44 and had planned to replace it with a 77/357. Today I went to my LGS and found a single copy. I was a bit disappointed with the fit, particularly the safety and the bolt. My 44 was tight and everything worked well. The 357 safety would not stay in the locked position, was sloppily fit and the bolt had considerable play in it, much more than the new 77/44 beside it or my old 77/44. Anyone else seen this or is this (hopefully) an exception?

I bought mine two weeks ago & it is very tight. I have not shot it yet. I cleaned & oiled it & cant wait to try it. check around for another one.

Maybe this was just an exception. I hope so. I came home empty handed but with my money in my pocket. Kind of wish I had held onto my 77/44, it was top notch in all areas. FWIW I looked over a Scout and it was great. Only problem was it was sold. :(

I have a couple SP101's in .357, another .357 rifle and did have a GP and BlackHawk in .357. I just wanted to have a companion for them. The 77/44 was the only .44 I ever had. To be honest I regret selling it and wouldn't if I could go back.

Just wanted to update this thread. I was at Whittakers yesterday and saw another copy with serial number about 300 plus higher than the one I OPed about. This one was tight and fit/finish was very good. I didn't want to cast a bad light on this little rifle and the first one I saw must have been an exception. Will definitely be getting one. :lol:

For what it's worth, I just thought I'd chime in too. I bought a 77/357 probably in late summer of last year. The model was new enough from Ruger that my local gun shop hadn't heard of it yet. Haven't shot it many times, but from what little experience I've had with it, fully expect it to be one of my very favorite rifles of all time in the long run. Bolt seems to function perfectly. Not too loose, not too tight. Just right. Must have been an anomaly.

I think so. I really liked the .44 and hoped Ruger would make the .357. It had to be an exception because the one I saw yesterday was as good as the 44 I had and it was a very good gun. I just didn't want to damage the reputation of the gun.

I bought a 77/357 last September. After one trip to the Range, I sent it back due to jamming and a creepy trigger. When i got it back, the magazine stopped working, so I sent it back.

I mentioned these issues in a few threads to see if anyone else was having similar issues. I didn't get any response, so I think is was made on a Monday morning. A rifle got shipped that should have been reworked. However Ruger did fix the problems so you might give them a call and see what they suggest.

I guess a Monday gun gets through occasionally. I've bought many a Ruger and just sent my first one back last month. It was repaired to my satisfaction and I have no complaints. I have not bought the .357 yet but it is second on my short list. Hopefully I'll have it next month. :D
