Some serial numbers on some actual 77/22's with the "V" block and those with a threaded barrel would really help everybody's cause here. This isn't the first time this question has come up.

I'll start, mine is 702-00569 and I bought it in April of 1997 and of course it has the v-block. Curiously, in the instruction manual it shows an exploded view of the 77/22 l.r. and magnum on one page and a view of the 77/22 hornet on the next page. The l.r./magnum shows the barrel with a notch, the v-block, and two screws and the 22 hornet shows a barrel with a notch but no v-block or screws and what appears to be threads on the shank of the barrel. Were the hornet barrels screwed in?

The Hornets of course are center rifles and I do ot think that they were ever made with V Blocks. My old VHZ was not.

I'm just curious why they show the hornet barrels with the notch cut in them. Inquiring minds want to know.

#700-42290, pretty early (1986) so not much doubt it's a V-block model.

Sure thing. It's on page 24, in the disassembly section:chet15 said:
"6. Barrels are threaded into the receiver and should not be removed except by the
factory.
NOTE: On .22 LR, .22 Magnum, and .17 HMR rifles manufactured prior to
11/13/2009 and Serial No. 703-58030:
a. Remove the (2) barrel retainer screws and barrel retainer.
b. Slide the barrel forward to remove it from the receiver."
