77-22 Ejector

I've got an older 77-22 that has a failure to eject about 30% of the time. The fired case stays gripped by the extractor so that I have to manually flip the case out with my finger. I called Ruger and was told to ship the rifle back for their inspection. I've looked at what I believe is the ejector, the upward projection that's cast on the rear of the magazine housing/floorplate and have thought of trying to make it a bit higher to engage the base of a fired case being held to the face of the bolt. I would appreciate any insight into home repair to make ejection positive and 100%.

I believe that with a magazine in place the case is ejected by a raised lip near the rear of the feed lips of the magazine, at least on my 77/22 that's how it works. On mine the ejector only comes into play if there is no magazine in the gun. Have you tried a new magazine?

I'll have to dig up my second magazine and compare it with the one I always use. I can see the corner formed on the magazine that looks like it should hit the rim and eject the case. I will compare it with the second mag.

Ruger tech (?) seemed confused because he said there was no ejector listed on his parts sheet. Maybe we know why if the ejector is part of the magazine.

I found my extra magazine and compared the two. The extra mag. has a nice sharp corner to contact the extracted case but the mag. from the rifle has the corner rounded off. A few strokes with a tiny file squared it up and I now await range time to test it. My guess is that the ejection problems are over.
