7 1/2 44-40 vaquero

does anyone have one? there was a thread a few days ago about the rarity of the 7 1/2s in general, and someone mentioned the 44-40. man, that HAS to be a rare bird! i think i have only ran across 2 44-40s, and i am pretty sure they were both 5 1/2s.

so, does anyone have a factory 7 1/2??? post some pics!

I've seen a couple, but they are rare. Most of the 44-40's I've encountered are 5.5". 4 3/4" is a distant second.

I have a blued/cc one. Bought used just cause it was different. Never wven fired it myself. Prob one if a couple that will get price tags on them soon.

My Neighbor shooting Pard has two 7 1/2" 44-40 blue Vaqueros.
I guess he didn't know Ruger made them in 45Colt :lol: :lol:

I just sold a 7.5" 44-40 a couple of weeks ago in the Classifieds here if you want to do a search to see pictures. They are really nice guns.

that is nice rainman! i have a ss 44mag 7 1/2 and the serial number is pretty close to that one. i bet they made a run of polished ss 7 1/2s in 95.

i have always heard that the 44 7 1/2s were fairly rare. the 44-40s have to be even more rare, but evidently there are some out there. i may just have to start looking for one. i am sorry i missed yours!

Howdy!
Have been shooting Ruger Vaqueros in 44-40 for a number of years; between me and my guy, we have 6 SS ones with 7 1/2in barrels, and 2 blued ones with 7 1/2in barrels.
It's our favorite old west caliber and barrel length for cowboy action shooting, both smokeless and especially black powder.
A number of years ago, when I found out they were going to be discontinued, I went over to my local FFL and ordered 4 SS ones; one of the best revolver purchases I ever made!

The 7-1/2" .44-40 Vaqueros are rare, and they're even rarer with simulated ivory panels! I estimated once that probably not more than 400 each of the ivory in stainless and blue/cc were made.

Other rare ones include the 7-1/2" .45 with ivory (probably less than 1,000 made). And the 7-1/2" .44's with ivory are pretty tough too.

I bought my father a stainless 7 1/2 44wcf in the 90's. Ordered it through the exchange in Camp Pendelton. I have a blued/cc in 7 1/2. Great pistols only wish Ruger used the correct cylinder - barrel dementions. .427 with a .429 barrel? Guess those slipped by without thinking about it

The last ones from the factory 58-xxxxx had the correct cylinders in them for the .429 barrel and the ones with the bad cylinders I send back and Ruger repair them FREE . I have four 44-40 that will all take .430 bullet now and they are super shooters .

I have one and do not remember what I paid for it. Have shot around a dozen rds. and is in the old cardboard box that Ruger used. A very pretty gun. Camera is down with dead batt.

I have a ruger vaquero 44-40 chrome with a 7 1/2 in barrel brand new in the box test fired only who knows the value it is very rare!!!

It's stainless steel most likely (Ruger didn't chrome them). As for value, somewhere between $500 and $800 looking at ones that actually sold on Gun Broker. The length is rare, but most cowboy action shooters want the shorter barrels (and I figure they made up a good portion of the buyers in the past.) Anyone looking to use it as a shooter will probably need to get the cylinder reamed as mentioned above; so one needs to add in an additional cost for a gunsmith (I'm not sure Ruger supports repair work on them any more; seems I've heard something about that recently.)

I've got 3 blued shorties and one 7 1/2 high polish SS in .44-40. wanted to stay with the .44-40 because I'm using a '73 Winchester. Maybe some day there will be a Henry in my future. Coogs.
