A six hour round trip hike along the rim of the Rio Grande Gorge just outside of Taos, New Mexico. The bridge itself is pretty impressive but the sights you can see from the rim trail were breath taking !!!! Should have listened to Ms. Lefty and put on some sun screen, got burnt red !!!!!

According to the info about the Gorge this was not cause by erosion from the river it was a split in the earth itself. That would have been a day to be there to see this open up !!!!!

I mentioned crossing the Rio Grande, and some folks asked me if I had any problem crossing or getting back.

"I cross the Rio Grande without any problem", I told them.

I've been there a few times and to the ski area not far in the opposite direction. We took some photos there in Nov of '12. I think it's about 700' from bridge to water.

Thanks for sharing. Beautiful! Might to have some ropes to get down into the gorge. I presume there is a trail somewhere that would let you get down safely.

some buddies of mine decided to hike back up into that canyon back around 1969, as one of them told me later "I had no idea there were even that many rattlesnakes in the entire country"

Who told the tale of the earth splitting? A Native American amusing imself at your expense?

That is beautiful country. I spent a few days camping in the area and enjoying several hot springs. Last I knew, all public hot springs are officially clothing-optional. Very spiritual experience.

Mrs. Thumbcocker and I were on that bridge at the end of May. If you are near Taos go to Michael's restaurant for a meal. The burrito's are fantastic. If you get there for breakfast have one of the fresh apple fritters. Deep fried sex on a plate. Also Jim Bridger's house is a neat stop. The BLM office can give you maps and advice on camping and sight seeing. Enjoy your trip.
