6.5 creedmore

I am going to buy a 6.5 creedmore just for target shooting.Narrowed my choices to ruger heavy barrel 28" ba ,predator with i think 24" barrel , or savage 10 carbine with heavy barrel.Any suggestions.My predator in 223 shoots about 1" at 100 yards with factor loads.Thanks

If only bench/target shooting, the VT is a good choice. Too long, heavy, blocky/ungainly/unbalanced for much of anything else.....
If you get the Savage, you are still stuck with a Savage....
The Hawkeye Predator is really the only pick of the choices you gave,if hunting/field shooting is in the equation at all....

I agree with huntsman 22. Of the choices you listed, the American predator would be the way to go. It's half as much as the VT, allowing you to spend that money on a great scope and ammo. The rifle itself can be used for target shooting, hunting, and, in a pinch, personal protection. Bob!! :mrgreen:

I may be wrong, but I don't think the OP is interested in the American Predator. I believe he inquired about the Hawkeye Predator(even though he didn't state) because of the similar quality of the VT. The Hawkeye has the same great 2-stage trigger as the VT, and a good lam stock.

I have the M77 Hawkeye VT with 28" Barrel and will shoot the Hornady 140gr Match ammo in a 1/2" 100 yards,Gun has a great trigger also.

Of those I'd say the VT model. I have one, great trigger and the stock aids in stable shooting. You may want to visit the "Precision Rifle" thread a few doors down, it comes in 6.5 Creedmoor too.

It shoots the lights out long range but then so do other 6.5s -- like the venerable Swede and Mannlicher and the 260 Rem versions -- when supplied with the same bullets and barrel twists. Not a dime's worth of difference. Except marketing of course. NEW is all and of course the Eurpean 6.5s are for sissies, yeah I know.

The fact that Hornady took the time to produce some actual "match grade" ammo, that is fairly easily found on store shelves and costs no more than 308 ammo........is what puts the Creedmoor at the top of the 6.5s. Is it WAY better, or even ANY better than a 260 Rem or 6.5x47 Lapua......Nope, not at all, until you factor in that both guns and ammo for this caliber are MUCH more readily available than the other two.

Even Winchester loads affordable match ammo for the 6.5 CM. As stated, the 6.5CM was designed from the ground up as a long range match cartridge and as a plus it fits into any short action magazine including AR's, and is very powder efficient. Bob!! :mrgreen:

I have a '95 Mauser, 6.5 x 55 opened up to Ackley imp. If the creedmore shoots any way near what the ackley does go for it. 6.5 is damned hard to beat for target, long range and hunting. The smith that built this rifle took a Moose with it before I bought it.

There are 2 calibers that fit into the 5.56 mags, rifles with tiny adjustments, the 6.5 and 6.8 spc11. Both are better than 5.56;
if you try to figure why our govt picked the 5.56 as our war caliber has to be they aSSumed it would be cheaper; as to the 6.5 and 6.8 spc11 they are 2 close to even try.

#1 V?? They do show up from time to time. AS "I" understand it this was another "Let's makes sure it fits in a AR platform magazine". Everything after that is gravy but that was the initial impetus to design the cartridge. Then we do the short/fat bore balanced thing and high BC bullets and "surprise" it shoots well especially with match grade ammo. What it doesn't do is short as flat and as hard as thew .264 Win Mag and it does recoil more than the true varminters in .224.

I personally find darned near anything above .224 a poor choice for a SERIOUS varmint rifle. Not that you can't hit them but nothing much bigger is made for 100s if not thousands of rounds in the course of a day/week. Yes. you can show pictures of 4 dead PDs . Show me a pile of several hundred shot with the rifle in a day and I'll be impressed. I suspect recoil would become an issue.

One of the most accurate rifles I own is a #1 "V" in 257 Roberts. Built back in the 70s to shoot 75s at 3400 fps and nothing else. I can hit stuff at nearly any reasonable range . BUT even it becomes an issue of recoil and just taking a battering if/when you try and shoot a couple hundred a day. Any more I stick to the smaller stuff and carry it "just in case" or for a few shots from time to time for S+Gs. Or while others cool down.

Picketpin, I'm having lots of fun with my .257 loaded to .250 Savage performance level. Kicks less than .30 WCF and super accurate. Took a nice fat doe with it the other day no problem.
