6.5 Creedmore Brass

I might get a 6.5 Creedmore but I am holding back as I anticipate not being able to get brass. Ruger quit making .260 Rems and has gone off into the 6.5 Creedmore.

Does anybody out there know about reforming .308, 7mm 08, .260 into .260 Creedmore. It seems it would entail setting the shoulder back, trimming, and neck inside reaming then finally fire forming. I have tried to contact Redding but no luck yet.

Possibly by the time I get around to this Rem, Win, & others will be making 6.5 Creedmore brass. If Ruger still made their rifles in .260 Rem I would get one of them.

You've got it down if you want to fireform. Hornady makes the brass and it lasts. I'm happy with the 6.5 Creedmoor!

I have a 6.5 Creedmoor, and new brass is currently hard to come by. However, the 250 Savage is very close. Neck it up to 6.5, and fire form it with a light load. The brass is not designed to the same pressure as the 6.5, but it should handle medium loads.

Your other option is to buy factory ammo, and reload the empty cases. As always be carefull. 8)

You need to get a copy of HANDLOADER magagzine JUNE 2011 edtion.
John Barsness has an article about the 6.5 Creedmore. He is making brass from 22-250. You'll have to read it for the instructions. Very good article.

Mike, you are correct 22-250 is 250 savage necked down and I think most of us know that. 22-250 brass is somewhat easier to find than 250 savage brass. Read the article in Handloader it is very informative. jn

Upon reading these responses I went out and bought a copy of Handloader Magazine.

I should of thought about fireforming .22-.250 brass.

I have fire formed brass using cream of wheat (COW) method and have also used cream of rice (COR) method for .338-06 and .375-.338. Fireforming makes for a concentric neck. If you come from the south grits also works.

The .22-.250 is usually loaded about 60,000 psi so that brass should take 6.5 Creedmore pressures.

Barness did not mention any thing about the dreaded "doughnut" effect (when the former junction of neck & shoulder is now part of the new case neck). But moving the shoulder back of a .260, 7mm 08, .308 case would probably make a bigger "'doughnut" (inside neck reaming removes the doughnut)

We have strict rules against shooting of guns inside the house so all fire forming is done at the range (it is smelly, noisy, lead fumes might be present, and a fire might result from a box of smoldering news papers). After a session of 50 or so take everything apart and clean up real good. The inside of your bore will look like a sewer pipe but it is easily removed using foam bore cleaners and Hoppes solvent (like a frying pan with burnt pan cakes)

Being from Louisiana, I used some grits to fireform some 280 Ackley brass, using Unique powder and wax over the end. It was very messy, but yieled the desired results. Since then, I caught some some Nosler 280 AI brass on sale and have not looked back. If I ever get a 6.5 Creedmore, I believe that I'll get five boxes of factory loads and go from there. Bob! :)

I noticed that Midway has 250 Savage brass in stock, but they also have Hornady Creedmore brass in stock for a dollar more, so why bother! Bob! :wink:

I got to shoot one today, a Savage in 6.5 Creedmore. That is one accurate son of a gun! It was making one whole groups with ease.

Do you know what length and barrel twist rate that 6.5 Creedmore was that you were shooting?

I'm looking for a rifle as reported in Handloader Magazine to be very accurate in a 26" long barrel with a 1:8 twist rate to stableize out past 200yds. The Ruger Hawkeye they reported on apparently is not available through the Ruger catalog.

I have a Rger bolt action in 6.5 Creedmoor, And I just asked the gun dealer to order it. I have the stainless 26' barrel with the synthetic stock. I have not yet tried it beyond about fifty yards, but it is a shooter. I am still in the process of clearing a proper rifle range at the ranch.

Working gets in the way of my shooting. I have had my 6.5 for over a month.

Scramjet, the blued rifle is #37151 and SS is #37105, both 26" barrel Hawkeye's. Barness didn't state in the article if his rifle was blue or SS, IIRC. BTW, Williams Shooters Supply in Quincy, Illinois has both in stock as I post this. Bob! :)

I think the 2011 Hawkeyes in 6.5 Creedmoor have 24" barrels now. The older ones did have 26". The heavy target model has a 28" barrel.

Thanks for the up-dated info. I plan to check into William's Shooters Supply. The 2011 Ruger listings do not offer the Hawkey 6.5 Creedmor in a 26' barrel in 1:8 twist. Thanks for the up-date, I'll let you know what happens.

I think that the Ruger web page is wrong. Several Ruger wholesalers list the new blue & stainless 77's with 26" barrel. I have one from last year and it's a shooter.

Just because it's in print, doesn't mean it's correct. Ruger's famous for catalog errors because the folks that do the printing or website aren't building the guns. Bob! :wink:

I mailed Ruger, had to laugh they said they will send the request to their sales and marketing dept. In the meantime I looked up William's Shooter's Supply. Apperently they are a whole saler only to FFL's. Looks like it will take a little looking around to figure things out.

Scramjet, Your local dealer can order from Williams, they are nice folks to deal with. (Obviously, I have an FFL, how else could I get all my stuff). You can go on Ruger's website and ask questions via e-Mail and this may be what you did. Years ago, when Ruger announced the Mark II 77 in 350 Remington, it was advertised with a 24" barrel, Mine showed up with a 22 " barrel. Ruger stated that they could not be held responsible for printing errors. Same case here. I just reread Barness' article in Handloader and his rifle was a blue 26" last year's model Hawkeye. I'll probably have a 6.5 Creedmoor before the year's out, probably a Hawkeye since I have a #1A in 6.5x55. Bob!! :wink:

Forget the end of the year idea this summer is going to be very short as it presents it's self. In the meantime, I have several flat tops to deal with (winter cast load development) this holiday weekend.

I almost ordered these items today from MidwayUSA. A set of Hornady reloading dies in 6.5 Creedmore and some Hornady 6.5 brass, both went on sale today and in stock. No rifle yet, but i'll be ready. I held off until I check my stock of 6.5 bullets. Bob! :wink:
