While I wholeheartedly support the idea of celebrating the 4th, I think we need to celebrate what holidays are about.
The 4th is celebrating our independence, not veterans.
Memorial Day is for celebrating those who gave everything they had and ever will have had for our way of life.
Veterans Day is for celebrating those who served.
Armed Forces Day is for celebrating those who are currently serving.
And everyday is for celebrating that we can celebrate the above "special" days. This is why my flag flies everyday, not just on designated holidays.

The last sentence of our Declaration of Independence always humbles me:
"And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."

We wouldn't be celebrating our independance without the veterans.... without the continental army independance would just be an idea...
The VFW, American Legion, and our national guard always figured very prominently in our 4th parades back home...

Remember, no guns, no Independance ! Go out and have an unloading of the brass ceremony. Yesterday here was huge block party and a bang-up job of launching 3-4 grand worth of major boom-booms. A redneck parade of decorated atv's, hay wagons and boat trailers. A cornhole tourny and raffles to raise money towards next years fireworks and porta-potty rental.

Independence Day is always a good time to reflect on why that war was fought and the great effort our founders went to in order to design a Republic that would stand the test of time.
It's also a day to lament what an ignorant electorate we have that knows nothing of our history and only votes for free stuff. I'm seriously afraid that this Republic is at the precipice. We can't get much more venal and ignorant and remain a free and powerful country. Today is a day to pray for the United States of America.

One of my ancestors was one of those who defied the British. Little known outside of the family, but was a merchant ship Captain who made it his business to run British blockades on both sides of the Atlantic. Not during the Revolution (born 1783), but prior to and during the War of 1812. There were many such merchantmen who did the same. He was just one.

Independence day is also a special day for me for it was my great, great, great, grandfather "Major Daniel Piatt" (Died 1780) who was in the continental army under George Washington.

On this 240th anniversary of our Declaration, may these words from John Adams to his wife Abigail Adams regarding the Declaration of Independence be heard again and again:
Truly - Our founders who risked their lives, their liberty and their property understood EXACTLY what they were doing and understood the risks they were taking. And they did it anyway.
