Not at all. You can get it from Buffalo Bore Ammo (which is really good brass) OR you could get the brass from Starline. Also Hornady has 480 ammo. I believe HSM may also as well as Double tap or Corbon (a few more I'd check) Someone may know about the last ones for sure. Great caliber. Good hard casts and they don't have to be loaded hot to handle just about anything walking.
Midway has Hornady 480 brass in stock, I just picked up a box since it was available. I like the 480 so much, I'm having one built on a New Vaquero.
What ever way you go, don't go crazy buying brass untill you find out if your gun likes that brass. Seems some don't like Hornady brass. I don't think that's a lot of them if it would be a bummer if yours was one. I personally like Starline brass. FWIW

It's got a custom 5 shot cylinder................there won't be any problem with it staying together. Jack Huntington has built a bunch of them.

With the 480R rated at 48,000 psi (NOT Cup), the stainless steel should be adequate if heat treated to be less-than maximum hardness. That is Huntington would be able to document material and proof pressures by coupon of the finished bar stock cylinder.
Frame stretching on the Vaquero topstrap would be my priority concern as there is not alot of steel there. But again, the maker will certify the safety of his design.
Still wishing someone would make up a 480Ruger barrel for a No. 3 carbine with hunting sights (Williams, Millet, etc.) and I would take it to the dark Adirondack woods for fall bear... UNtil Ruger re-makes a 96 lever action in Bill's namesake chambering, that's all I can do!

Ordinary people can’t afford to shoot Buffalo Bore or even Hornady .480 factory cartridges, at least not enough to develop any skill with a revolver. .480 is a great cartridge but unless you’re rich it’s a reloader’s cartridge.
stevem’s New Vaquero/629 barrel rebored to .480 project will wind up with a thin forcing cone. It won’t have the stress inducing thin flat on the bottom that S&W 19s & 66s have but I still wonder if it will hold up to much use at 48,000 psi. However I bet it would be a lot of fun knocking down pins and metal with heavy slugs at modest velocity.

Ruger made #1s in .480. Buying one would likely be less expensive than rebarreling a #3. #3s are like Rem. 788s in that they were built to be bargains but aren’t inexpensive anymore.mohavesam said:

Bear Paw was right on. My 480 hates Hornady ammo. and brass. I reload using starline.
