Can a #1 in 458 winmag be rechambered to 458 Lott? This has probably been asked already but I am not good at searches. If so, who can do it right?

Wondered this myself. Got my 458 a few months ago and the Lott brass & dies were in stock. Got my WM stuff after a couple weeks of backorder.

I gotta ask - why? The .458 WM is big enough for anything on earth already and, according to my Hornady manual, the Lott has only a 50 fps advantage using the 500 grain bullet. Do other Lott loads show a significant advantage?

My reason was a question of availability of components. The Lott was created to increase cartridge capacity to avoid some perceived powder ignition problems with the 300WM not necessarly to make a vastly superior round.

New powders make loading the 458 Winchester to the 2150fps standard a little easier. 20 years ago it was tough to get advertised velocities without severely compressing the load. The extra case capacity of the Lott lets you get to 2150 or 2200fps with ease. It is one of the simplest conversions available and you can shoot 458 Win. loads in it although you will lose a little velocity because of the added jump to the throat.

Pretty easy conversion for any good smith. But I suggest you shoot a Lott in a similar weight rifle before going forth. The Lott's is pretty brutal if the rifle weighs in at less than 10 pounds.

It's a very easy conversion and the Lott will fire WM's with no problem. However, don't expect a dramatic increase in power. When loaded to the same pressures the Lott will deliver about 80 fps more than the WM.

Had up until some couple years ago a Ruger RSM in 458Lott and opening up the chamber of 458Win.Mag to accept the Lott is not a major job for experienced 'smith. Keep in mind that the Lott is a true magnum length cartridge as opposed to the 458Win.Mag for it is a "standard" length round(often referred to as '06 length) and don't know if the magazine/bottom metal is long enough to accept the Lott length round?? The Ruger Safari Magnum action is somewhere in the area of .625" longer than the 458WinMag, 300WinMag, '06, etc. The 375HH and Lott are of the stretched length. Again not sure about your bottom metal, just a thought.
