.357 self defense ammo

To recommend 'any ammo that you have around the house' or 'run-of-the-mill rounds' or 'a simple and cheap cast bullet' or 'a bullet of the correct caliber' or 'any ammo in the correct caliber' for self defense, whether for the 357 magnum or not, is irresponsible. Get real guys. A powerful round will stop most people, but what works best? ...and why settle for less in your self defense and carry weapon?

I want to make sure that I have a good gun and good self defense ammo that will do a number on the intended target. If you want to settle for less, so be it.

To recommend inferior products for self defense without a caveat explaining it is your choice alone and why, is absurd. :shock:

In regards to the OP question, it has been asked, and answered, Jimbo. All of your diversionary dancing doesn't counteract our responses. "Designer" self-defense ammo is not necessary for adequate self-defense if using other suitable options. And you know this to be true.

Answer this Wolfsong and 6gun since you are both so sure of yourselves. I reload and shoot lot of 357 magnums. I use 158gr copper plated bullets, TCP (total copper plated) and I use a lot of different powders and charges, everything from 13.0gr of Accurate #9 to 5.0gr of HP-38. So tell me since I use these for target shooting and practice and they are the correct caliber and what I have around the house, is this what I should be loading in my home defense gun and is this what I should use as my carry load?

...or should I use quality factory self-defense ammo from a reputable American company?

Do we need a poll to prove to you guys that the majority of folks here think I am more on the right track than you guys?

All depends on how much you trust your loads, I have no idea what or how you load but I trust what I load and know it will do the job, apparently your not very trusting of your reloading skills.

Constantly insisting that what you (edit) said about self defense ammo is correct is ridiculous Wolfsong and you know it. Why don't you stop defending such dumb advise. I think I have more than proved my point that neither one of you guys should be naively recommending to shooters that they use 'whatever they shoot', or 'correct caliber', or 'simple and cheap cast bullets', or similar ammo for home and self defense. If you still don't think so let me know and I will put up the poll and we will see what the rest of the group thinks. ...or just read the first page of this thread again and try to get the drift for yourselves.

My strategy has been to replace commercial ammo with stuff I load myself, and key to that, is that the ammo works reasonably well in any gun I put it in, whether a 3 inch or a six inch barrel.

Am I nuts?

Just like reloading for any reason you control the results. You can make a SD round that fits you and your gun better than a factory round that must work well in every gun. ...but this thread was about buying SD ammo.

I'm a big believer in the KISS principle, so once I've settled on a load that I know for a fact will do what I need it to do, I use it in everything I have in that caliber regardless of barrel length.

If that makes me "nuts", then I guess I'm nuts.
