Ammo choice is very important !!
Against animals higher in the food chain , no matter the caliber gets deep penatrating projectiles , ya gotta get thru tuff skin & crush bone , bottom line , make a hole & preferably thru both sides.
HPs are simply not the correct choice , period !
& as stated earlier shot placement .
For me personally ,it would be hard to keep composier to place a well aimed shot on a charging bear & as I understand it & researched it the vitals that are exposed are very small targets for a head on shot vs. a side view shot. The brain & spine are small areas , running ,bouncing targets are tuff enuff with a shotgun let alone with a handgun !!!
My exposure to blackies is very limited , there`s a blueberry farm behind my house ,250yds. away, I can glass em , but when I try to get closer , they either smell me or see me & they tear a new hole in the woods line gettin back in the swamp. Cubs are a rare sight & when I do see em they`re usually 1-2 yr. cubs & mamma/cubs are on hi alert , even a distance dog barkin sends em back the way they came !!
