357 Mag 125 XTP and H110

Lyman says 22.0 as max for this combo-magnum primer
I have been loading 21.8 with good results.
However, I just picked up a copy of the Hornady 8th edition, and it shows 19.9 as max.
Anyone else using H110 with a 125 XTP? I dont want to continue using this load if it is not safe.

SHooting from a 6" GP100. I also have a S&W model 28, but reserve the hotter loads for the Ruger

Hodgdon lists 22.0gr as max also.

That is the same load I worked up in my 4" GP 100. I really don't see much difference between 21 and 22 grains but 21.6 - 21.8 seems to be marginally more accurate. Prints about 1.5" to 2.0" at 25 yards and shoots to the same POI. No signs of pressure or difficulty extracting but that little voice in the back of my head says "don't shoot those in my S&W Model 19"!

Yea, it has been the most accurate from the wifes 6" GP100. I have shot a few from my 4" S&W model 28 , but when I got home all the sideplate screws had shook loose, so I mostly use them in the Ruger now

Max loads like that are safe but not good for your guns. There could be forcing cone erosion as well as battering of the frame and components. If you reload there is no reason to shoot max loads with light bullets other than the fact that you like to do it. Can you say 'flamethrower'?

I make it a point to load standard or heavy for caliber bullets with slightly reduced charges, as long as they are accurate. That leaves a bigger margin of safety for me and my guns. :D :D

^^^^^^ Jimbo hit the nail on the head. In addition to what he mentioned about erosion of the forcing cone, there will be severe flame cutting of the top strap ... a self limiting process, but this combination is particularly bad for it.

I have 1k of the 125 grain xtp's to burn through, myself. The powder I'll use to minimize erosion is SR4756...just need to carve out some reloading time. sigh

She doesnt shoot a lot of these, though she does like it. Mostly shoots 158's with #9.
But occasiolanly, she likes those H110 125's. Probably 50-100 a month.
Is that going to be a real problem at that rate?

Jim, your rugers will be fine. Even your 28 will be fine...she'll just have some flame cutting...cosmetic.
