I'm reconnecting with some of our old rifle projects and this is one of my favorites.

We designed the .240 Incinerator in 1992 and assembled the gun in '93. It's basically a .264 Win Mag necked to 6mm and improved (minimal body taper, 35 degree shoulder).

The action was completely homebuilt....everything from the main receiver to the bolt. Same goes for the reamers and dies. Other features include:

- Jewel trigger set to 2 ounces.
- 28.5" Douglas blank, 1-12" twist
- McMillan benchrest stock painted with black lacquer
- All of this was pillar bedded
- The trigger guard and buttplate are also in-house and done out of aluminum

Using very slow surplus powders like WC860 and WC872 and commercial propellants like AA8700 we've achieved 4,400 fps with a 70 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip.

Unknowingly Ross Seyfried built his 6mm Mach IV the very same year. He used fast twist barrel though for 95 - 105 grain bullets.

Just thought I'd share this project. I haven't had the gun on the bench in 10 years but hope to work with it again this fall.

Nice project! Im in the process of having a 25/264 built. I don't believe I have an improved shoulder though. I have the donor rifle , the reamer has arrived from Pacific Tool , and have talked to David White in Ok about the build. I need to select a barrel yet and ship the parts to him.

How is accuracy with the velocities you are getting? And what did you go with for a barrel?

It routinely puts 3 shots in a 1/2" @ 100 yards (which was a huge surprise....I never thought it would do that well).

My best group measured 0.181"

Sorry for the poor photo but this was shot with B&W film back in '93.

Wow, with a 2 ounce trigger as well. Holy cow.

The 220 swift has velocities around 4000 but the bullets aren't usually as heavy as 70 grains though. I bet there isn't much left of it after hitting the target.

Lee,
Incinerator is a good name but at 4,400 fps I might have called it the mach 4 vaporizer.

I am partial to blued steel and walnut but that black lacquer with the stainless is perfect.

I do have you beat on velocity, I used a sabot holding a 100 grain projectile, a straight walled 20mm case, over a hundred grains of H-110 and a smooth bore Man barrel to reach 6500 fps. Don't ask about accuracy or pressure. :)

John
p.s., It was fired remotely and at 6500 fps I had complete case head separation.

Not too shabby at all! I hope the 25/264 can come close.

Sounds like a neat project. Definitely keep us posted.

I sure will. Im in the middle of a pretty big project with my house right now and hope to get around to it this winter. I'd like to have it ready to go for pdogs next spring. I wont use it a lot on pdogs but one has to see how it does on something besides paper targets!

I have a 1960 article on the 257 Condor (7 x 61 S&H necked to 25 cal). If I can get it scanned I email it to you. Just PM me your address.
