22 recommendation

I just ordered a SR22, I read a bunch of reviews, and it seems most people are well pleased, do a search for reviews to help your decision

I prefer the SR22 over the P22. Can't really say why-just the way it is.
My SR22 functions good enough and is easy to control.

I had the chance to handle a Walthers PPK-22 at my LGS/Range. I found the trigger pull to be unacceptably long and heavy, i.e. horrendously heavy. Having said that, I don't have a SR-22 but have been looking at them. I'm a Mark II kinda guy.

I like the 22/45s best among Ruger's pistols.

Smaller than that, I like the Bersa (or Firestorm) .22s

I've not had the best of luck with the SR-22

I have an SR22P that gave me fits the first 25 rounds. It leaded up so badly it looked like I was shooting a shotgun. HOWEVER, once I gave it some time with solvent and a good bore brush (actually two of them) it has worked the way you would expect. Based on mine, clean the bore before going to the range the first time. Other than that, it does fine.

Another one that has been a Jem, from day one, is a Bearcat.
It has done exactly what you would want it to.
Zero problems and very good accuracy.
(I got a stainless)

Its all about size. How small do you want to go? I often carry either a Beretta Bobcat or a North American Arms mini revolver. If I want to go larger I move up to my Ruger SP101. But anything bigger than the Beretta is hard to fit inside a pocket. Also love my Walther P22. It is about the biggest semi you can fit in your pocket. Very reliable and pretty accurate.

for myself, as many, there is a delicate balance where 'size/balance' factors affect functional accuracy too much, that the utility and need of such a firearm is overcome by 'handiness/concealable'.factors.

While I really like the Bearcat style for a variety of reasons, I've never been able to shoot them very accurately....my problem, not theirs. S&W has a small frame 'kit gun' that I can somehow use to better shooting results.

Of course the larger framed target models are very accurate but not very concealable or fun to carry.

You should be aware that some semi-auto .22's require high-velocity ammo, which is a tad more expensive and harder to find than standard velocity. My Sig is one of those. This may enter into your decision regarding semi-auto, vs DA revolver which will handle both. You might also consider a .25 or .32 pocket semi. There's plenty around and fairly cheap.

Shooting snakes with bullets isn't always an easy task, especially with small guns. Crimped .22 shot loads do not usually work in semi-autos. They don't have enough recoil to cycle the slide, and if the slide is manually operated they don't usually eject. I have not tried the CCI shot loads with the little blue plastic shot capsules. NAA's mini-revolver fits nicely into a pocket, but doesn't have very good sights. After that, you get into the Ruger LCR sized revolvers, and start needing big pockets.

Don't forget whatever rules your location may have about concealed carry when you start stuffing guns into pockets.

I like his choices in handguns. Field use is why I prefer the 22/45s over the Standard models and Mark Is or IIs. The lighter weight is niiiccce.

Weird? Maybe what's really weird, is guys that have nothing better to do, than cast ass-perations on my normalcy, or post wide-eyed emoticons because they're shocked that someone actually uses firearms to HUNT WITH. Plinking targets on a range ain't near as much fun, as a walk thru the woods with a purpose in mind. A feller can only eat so many paper targets, and besides, critters made out of meat taste better than paper or plinked-up pop cans.

Field use? Now 9x19, dontcha be talking over guys heads. They wouldn't know how to act, shooting in places they're not required to sweep up their brass when finished. Some folk just will never know the pleasures of meat they didn't buy at the store, or fur that ain't made outta nylon........

Your pics don't bother me... my three sons ate a lot of cotton-tail and fox squirrel when they were growing up... along with a bit of venison, elk (while stationed in Colo) and even a prong-horn antelope or two (taken in Wyoming at $25 each tag).

Now that it's just the wife and I, I don't hunt as much as I used to... but still enjoy it when I do.

Far as I'm concerned Huntsman can post every pic he's ever taken because not only is the subject matter excellent, so is the photography. If you don't like pics of dead critters, take up golf.

While my P22 has been a good one, the SR22 is probably a better pistol. I wouldn't really consider either a good choice for a field gun. For those who don't know, for Huntsman's purposes. A good fixed barrel auto like the Ruger MK-series, Buckmark, S&W 41, 2206, High Standard, Colt Woodsman, etc., would all be better choices.

I like the Brownings...

...but the latest 22/45RP is a good one too.

SR 22 Would be my choice !! I have Walter P 22 and HATE IT !! ( I spent $100.00 to get slide polished so it would operate as intended, run 500 rounds thru it and slide broke !!, sent it back and they replaced gun not sure I have even shot this one!! ) I got my first SR 22 in March of last year , liked it so much, and had hard time getting it away from my son, so we got another ..... Really no problems just use high vilosity ammo when they are new .....

I agree 100%. I first ran across huntsman22's pics on another forum when I was researching the Browning 1911-22. What strikes me as weird now is that no one over there thought his pics were weird.

I ended buying a Browning 1911-22 and am glad I did. I'd recommend it for what the OP is looking for. Don't know about snakes though, a revolver with 22 shot load might be better. Maybe a S&W 317.

The SR22 is a good choice for a semi-auto. That's what I seem to carry more and more in my pocket these days. If I think I will use bird shot I carry my Smith 317 8-shot DA revolver. The 317 is handy for shooting shorts or CB's as well. Ruger just brought announced a double action LCRX. If they bring it out in .22 it would also be a nice pocket gun.

It would also be a pretty good one too for serial number poker too, full house, 3-7's over 2-0's(if the 0's = Aces) or 4-7's. :wink: :mrgreen:

Just purchased a Phoenix Arms HP22A (don't throw rocks at me) in the Range Kit. Inexpensive, $200.00 with a 2" and 5" barrel. Took it to the range yesterday, along with a recently aquired MKI. the Phoenix shot any ammo I put through it with no problem. Very compact with the 2" barrel. Would make a good pocket gun, if you dont mind the safety arrangement. Main safety and a Hammer safety, hard to operate slide slide unless hammer is cocked.
Shot fair groups at 20', nothing like the MKI. $130.00 in the 2" barrel only. Made in USA, only gun Phoenix Arms makes. Also available in .25cal.

I like his pictures regardless of where he posts 'em, but "dead animals" might be the problem for some in this particular forum. Betcha if he posted 'em over in our Hunting Forum, guys would be eating 'em up! We're kinda partial to dead animals there...
