22 mag

Can't say I blame you. I don't have a 22 mag, but they seem to be calling me. I have a 22 LR, but the 22 mag is calling to me. I'm getting week. Not sure how effective they are in the standard LCR? I've got them in 38 special and 357 mag so not sure why I need a 22 mag. I know it's got to be loud.

This is probably my lack of knowledge, but in the snubby, would you really
gain perceptibly with the .22mag vs .22lr? In the longer barrel I can see
going for the mag, but in that short a barrel wouldn't a very large percentage
of potential performance increase be lost to powder burning in the air?

Looks to me that the slower burning powder in the .22 WMR needs a bit more barrel length to really perform well:

The .22Mag is going to see a velocity advantage regardless of barrel length. The .22Mag behaves like a magnum revolver cartridge and uses similar powder. Think of it as comparing the .38Spl to the .357, not a handgun cartridge to a rifle cartridge.
Powder does not burn "in the air". The powder is "burned" by the time the bullet reaches the forcing cone. What is left are expanding gases. It is those expanding gases that accelerate the bullet down the bore. More bore length means the gases work against the bullet for a longer period of time. More, slower burning powder simply produces more expanding gases and that produces more velocity.

The best .22wmr round to use in the LCR or LCRx is the Hornady Critical Defense. It's designed for them. It will blow a hole clean thru a mature 'coon's body and you can stick your finger in the exit wound. I've dispatched several of them in the last few years with the LCR. Don't have the LCRx, but I expect you could probably nail 2 with one shot if they were lined up right.

I have the LCRx in 22 LR and I really like that little pistol and it's a hoot to shoot! Just a lot of fun and if it's was in a .22 mag it would not be a bad defensive pistol either. Not the best, but not bad.
