.22 Mag autoloaders

Not many, current market has Magnum Research and Remington 597, a couple of others. Ruger 10-22 mag carbines are scarce and as expensive as the New Magnum Research models. CZ & BRNO and some old Savage or H&R autoloader 22 Mags occasionally at gunshows but always stupid high prices.
I recently ran across a KelTec PMR 30 pistol, cool piece, I wish KelTec would do a carbine of it.

I have one of the PMR-30 guns from Kel-Tec and it is fun to shoot. While I don’t consider them a top tier manufacture some if their stuff is fun and reliable. I do like the 22 mag round and recently purchased a semi-auto rifle from Excel Arms out in Ontario California. Is an interesting looking rifle so I took a chance on it.

The rifle so far is accurate and dependable but the scope it came with was total crap. I replaced it with a Nikon. Here is a pic…

Here is a recent thread from another forum I thought you might find interesting. I always wondered why the .22 magnum was not used more in an automatic. I think it would perform better then the .25 does.

Shoot one, you'll understand... a .22WMR pistol is LOUD, and has a HUGE MUZZLE FLASH that will ruin your low-light vision.

I've owned the AMT and the Kel-Tec PMR30... sold both.

The CZ-512 comes in .22 WMR for around $500. Probably the best .22 mag auto on the market for the price. Mine is very accurate, the looks aren't for everyone though.

Given WMR's vulnerability to scalpers, I'd opt for an autoloading rifle in a centerfire pistol caliber. I had wanted a CZ512 myself, but ended up buying a CX4 9mm instead. The cheap FMJ rounds are almost the same price and a lot easier to find; and if things get bad again, you have the option of hand-loads.

You are probably right, but it can't be louder than a single six with the magnum cylinder installed. I would not want it as a ccw that is for sure. I turned down a sweet deal on a used S&W j frame snub nose .22 magnum because of the noise and flash, and went with the .38, Ed

The Excel Arms MP-22 is one I would love to get, but they will not give you
a firm delivery date. I ordered one and they said four to six weeks. OK, I
can live with that. I checked back in eight weeks and they said ANOTHER
six to eight weeks. I canceled my order.

The eight inch barrel and fifty some ounce weight would make it a dream to shoot. 8)

P.S. I bought a 12" T/C barrel that shoots half inch groups at fifty yards. . :shock: .

No, not any louder than the Six for sure, but a much sharper report than many of the other pistol cartridges.

Ain't life good? My personal preference is the 10 inch octagon barrels on the Contender. They just seem so elegant. I was wanting a .223 barrel but found a .22 mag barrel instead. Ed

The FoNRA events have access to the Kel-Tec PMR-30 22 mags. Ours cost us about $350 via the NRA. What amazes me is the amount we are getting for them. At one event, we auctioned one & got $700.00. A friend told me yesterday he bought one for $600.00. At an approximate dealer cost of $350-$400, I'd figure they should sell for about $475 or so.
Add in that many can not find 22 mag ammo, makes me wonder why these guns sell so well.
I have shot 2 of them so far. Light, reasonably accurate, but nothing I'd overspend on.

The basic design of the .22 mag makes it very problematic in an automatic weapon. The long, skinny case is a real problem in a blowback action, and its performance doesn't justify the expense of a locked-breech design. A few manufacturers seem to have developed reliable designs, but the market just hasn't been there. As others have pointed out, a cost vs. performance ananlysis of the round isn't favorable. There's not a lot of buyers for a semi-auto groundhog rifle.
