22/45 Concern

I have a 22/45 that seems to develop surface rust on the "silver" part or unblued part of the bolt. This is the exposed portion when the bolt is fully in the receiver. I love the gun, it operates flawlessly and is very accurate. But if it sits for a month or two, and I go to retrieve it, I have to wipe of a layer of surface rust. Sometimes the oil with the rust seeps down into the action. I don't know if this is a problem or not but it certainly is aggrivating. Does anyone else experience this? And is there a better way to deal with it than just taking it out of the safe on occasion and cleaning it up?

Mine has a terrible life exposed to every sort of weather, dirt, handling with sweaty hands, spattered with blood,and even being dropped in the creek. I've never seen rust on the bolt regardless.

You're either using some strange type of moisture attracting 'oil' or your storrage area is way too damp. You might try waxing the bolt with a good automotive wax after a detailed cleaning.

you have to remove any and all the rust that is on the bolt, easy enough to polish off....keep it oiled ...good points above, you may be using something wrong and stroing in a wrong place...do NOT leave the gun in anysort of vinyl gun rug, it has to "breathe".......

Eezox. Great product. Use it to clean the gun, and then before your put the gun away, wipe enough on that bolt to make it wet and let it dry. The carrier evaporates and leaves a coat on the steel that actually gets into it. Not only prevents rust but also makes it easier to clean the next time. Same in the bore and it will stay cleaner too.

Turned on to it by Fred Smith a Bullberry Barrel Works (custom barrel maker for Contenders, Encores and other barrels). It is what he recommends for his barrels inside and out EXCLUSIVELY.

The scientific explanation of how it works is beyond me, but if you want to read it just do a search for Eezox and read it.

I live in hot, humid Florida and my rust problems went away with Eezox.

Thanks for all the replies. I really don't think it is a storage issue. I keep it in the original plastic case and it is stored along with many other handguns. I've never had an issue with the other guns. Many of my guns are in "Bore-Store" silicon socks, but those with the hard plastic cases are all ok as well.

I'll try that Eezox Louie, thanks for the input. That may be the answer.
