Does anyone know or have a link to data for velocity differences that can be expected between the 2 and 3 inch SP? I am interested in 38, 38+P and 357. I am considering purchase of an SP or possibly LCR. I also have the idea of the 327 SP also ( I know it only comes with a 3")

Thanks

None of the data you need, but I'd say your choice should depend more on projected use than muzzle velocity.
Just picked up an SP101 .357 today (2.25 barrel).
While I'd have preferred the 3" barrel for the range, my primary use is going to be CC - and, since I'll carry IWB, the shorter barrel is less likely to cause discomfort when sitting down.

My SP101 in .327 magnum is awesome. Shooting 32's is real easy and a good round to teach other family members to shoot with. When you jump up to the .327 mags there is a low recoil round that is perfect for the wife but still has better punch then 38+P. Or you can jump to the full near 500 ft lb. Speer 115g magnums, shooting those is 1/2 click off shooing my 4" Security Six in .357 magnum. Another big plus for me was 6 shots instead of 5. Also the gun carries as well as my SR9c, or pretty close.

Here is a good sight for barrel length vs velocity.

I would be using it for CC.

My own experience has been that my 3" guns have turned out to be to much....and not enough. To long for pocket carry, and to short for hunting or defense against dangerous game. Very workable yes for IWB/OWB carry, but I would rather go with the light S&W M&P360, over the twice as heavy SP.

I carry the 2 1/4" DAO (spurless) as a CCW only in a Mika pocket holster, so a 13/16" longer barrel and a hammer spur to snag on something makes a big difference. If I carried IWB or OWB I would consider the 3 1/16".

I have no trouble IWB carrying my 3 1/16" SP and like it a lot for a wheelgun in that role. While I will not say that I definitely WOULD NOT EVER have a really snubby, or really light .357 Magnum, I believe the 3" SP101 to be the "minimum" I care to use in this caliber. Interestingly, it is pretty close in overall dimensions, except width, to my 2 3/4" Speed Six. The SP does carry just a little better IWB. For pocket carry I'll go with an Airweight .38 +P.

When using this data, do be sure to add in the length of your revolver cylinder....which for a .38/.357 will be something around 1.75".

They measured their barrel lengths from the breach face, so revolvers get short changed the length of the cylinder, making short barrel velocity loss look even worse than reality.
