Neat as it is...no use for it personally. If it was a floorplate design vs rotory mag maybe. At least then it'd be an easy rebarrel to a caliber useful to me.

A couple years late... always good to see new guns, but personally I'd choose the .17 Hornet (reloadable and better ballistics).

Got Rugers in machII, HMR, Hornet and Fireball. But for some reason, the WSM will prolly make a place in the safe with the other 17's.....

Well, with such an obvious gap, it makes sense!

It has to be a better performer than that Bmag abomination from Savage.

Interesting the guy calls it an M77 Hawkeye with Micro receiver...and it has a rotary magazine...so it isn't a Hawkeye at all, it is a 77/17 chambered for .17WSM??
I would really be interested to see a double check on all of this since it is hard to believe there's a WSM cartridge of any type that would work in Ruger's rotary mag...but maybe I'm wrong there???
And...Ruger already builds a 77/22 in .22 Hornet.
But if it is a true WSM, would seem to really reduce barrel life???
And here's the other thing....Ruger got out of the WSM business quite a while ago, that is anything chambered with a WSM name.

Chet15-

Are you confusing the fairly new .17 Winchester Super Magnum (rimfire) round with the previous Winchester Short Magnum (centerfire) series? This cartridge is smaller than the .17 Hornet, so it should fit in any package that will accommodate the .22 Hornet.

You spend so much time buried in Ruger info, I can see info about other, lesser brands escaping your notice!

If this is the case, here are a couple of links to give you some background info:
http://www.gunblast.com/Savage-Bmag.htm (Jeff Quinn has a nice pic showing this cartridge relative to others.)

yeah...probably all true.
Just figured Ruger was strong headed about the WSM business. After the WSM lawsuits its hard for me to imagine the company paying royalties to anybody claiming they have a patent on such cartridges. You can bet that former ST writer will be asking for $.

I don't think Mr. Jamison can claim he designed a bottleneck rimfire cartridge. It's basically a 17 Hornady lengthened and a little bigger diameter. That's why Winchester went with Super instead of Short in the title: Winchester Super Magnum instead of Winchester Short magnum. Bob! :)

The 17 WSM is based on a 27 caliber rimfire power nailer cartridge that was necked down to accept a 17 caliber bullet. Not much magazine modification would be required. It is interesting. Now that it is chambered or soon to be chambered in a better rifle it may catch on. It was introduced in the savage b mag which left a lot to be desired. For me the 17 hmr is plenty. If I need 17WSM performance I would go hornet. Could be loaded to levels of all the 17 rimfires and a bit more.
