#1 fore arm, accuracy ideas

Looking for tips to make my #1B more accurate. I took the forearm off and the barrel channel in the wood looks like it is made to have pressure on the barrel at the front of the forearm. (I shot a couple of rounds withthe screw real loose, the point of impact was a good 6 inches lower) Does anybody ever free float that area? What screw tension do you use when tightening the forearm back on the hanger? What is this rubber gasket I have heard about to put around the screw? Any help is appricated. Do you rest on the sand bags way back close to the reciver or at the mid point on the forearm?

I came across another approach entirely but it only applies to a full custom project.

The smith making my .257 Roberts AI does away entirely with the Ruger slanted forearm screw. He uses a standard mounting arrangement with new wood based on a vertical screw at 90 degrees located @ mid way toward the foreend tip; firmly fixed to a nut on the hanger ; foreend wood floated from the action; and a fully floated barrel. The idea is to isolate hanger vibrations from the barrel (Of course he also actually seals the wood -- a touch that Ruger omits.) I'll let you know how this works out in a few months when it is all done.
