Do you have a tap type debit card or just the chip only type ?

Do the tap type cards work good all the time?

My small town bank debit card chip only is always failing, new issue cards last about a week and then fail. (n)o_O

Neither........the old fake covers on readers installed by bad guys to capture the slide or insert are still out there....but the "tap" is now easily captured via blue tooth or the old school hacked POS way.

Roll the dice with plastic.......it gave me a career I just retired from.

I don't understand why anyone would use a card that gives direct access to their bank account.... Isn't a credit card safer..???

J.
So you are saying you dont understand why anyone would write a check to buy groceries either .

Isnt the subject of the thread anyway

Do stores still accept checks?

Even if they did, it would be harder to take the check and use it to buy more stuff the same way someone would use a stolen credit card number.

I still maintain that using Apple Pay on your phone is more secure than using your credit card.

Using the credit card to tap vs inserting it into a machine would also be secure in same way I suppose.

My cards all have a strip, a chip, and a tap.
Mine too, and I hate them all. Whatever happened to the raised number cards that got swiped under carbon paper?

Oh yeah, it was deemed to be insecure because of the carbon paper that you could request after making a purchase.

Now you have this walk by within a hundred yards and we have all your information cards. BIG IMPROVEMENT.
(Heavy on the sarcasm.) Cash is still king in my book.

A credit card allows 25 days to pay for your new purchases, and if you time the purchase right (right after you receive your statement) you will get another month to sit on it. I seldom use a debit card anymore.

We each have a debit card and credit card. Both have strips n chips. I can tap either of them to use them but rarely do as I've gotten use to sticking it into the reader .
Only use the debit card to get cash at atms.
I like the cash back I receive and get to spent at Costco. Wife pays for most of the stuff we buy at Costco on her credit card and gets AA miles.
My free money is from other places and purchases.

Wife's credit card has been compromised twice, mine never has, and the credit card company over nighted new cards both times.

This credit/debit debate comes up here every year or so.

I’ll just add that I spent 40 years in the credit / finance / collection / ID theft business. No way on Gods green earth you could get me to use a debit card. But … y’all do what seems best for you.
Ok, serious question.
We only use our banks ATM or a national bank( Wells Fargo to be specific) for cash, never a random stand alone machine.
Do you recommend ditching our debit cards ?

Thank you for your experienced professional advice. 👍

Tap vs insert vs slide, debit vs credit vs apple vs whatever else form of vodoo may be out there these days....WTH?.....
Call me crazy, but I think that a lot of people cause their-self stress because they fall prey to the Wall Street marketers and ain't thinking through what they are actually doing before they do it.....
Myself, I still write checks to pay bills, and use cash for face to face purchases...The exception is when I buy ammo on line, which usually requires a card....One can neither "tap", "insert", nor "slide" that kind of a purchase anyway, so that makes the question at hand moot.....
Yeah, I know that I'm an old dinosaur, and yeah, I know that I have to buy stamps, and no, no one "gives me cash back" "free miles" or whatever else the cool kids think that they are getting for free these days. Some places do however, give me cash discounts, sometimes as much as 10%....And...I get to visit with the nice ladies down at my local Post Office for a few minutes when I drop by to get my stamps.

Just sayin' that things ain't always got to be as stressful as we sometimes make them.

edited for spelling.

When I go to pay, I always ask: "Do y'all take cash".
I do pay for my stamps with a credit card.....

Yes. Ditch all three.

No debit.
No ATMs.
No “legacy” banks. Surely there’s a locally owned and/or operated bank or credit union in your area.

Many will disagree. I’m just limiting my exposure though.
Our bank account is 43 years old, unfortunately it exists in the third name/buy out. Use to know the bank founder when it was in its second location as a local single location bank, not now.

I wasn't aware you could get cards with just one thing or the other.

I just had my credit card compromised for over $3K last week. I receive notifications on any credit card purchase so I called BOA as soon as I received the notifications. There were 2 purchases and both were for airlines. When I was talking to the BOA rep I asked him if they would be able to catch the person responsible for the compromise as it shouldn't be too difficult because of what you have to go through to get your airline ticket and the soonest they were probably flying was later that evening or the next day. He didn’t really have an answer. I called BOA within 5 minutes of receiving the notification. What would you guess as the percentage of times they catch these losers ???

To the OPs question I have the tap feature but I swipe it pretty much always. I’m in a small town also and never noticed whether the tap works or not but the whole ATM machine will be down at least once an month that I use it and the next ATM for my bank is 30 miles away. I only use my debit card at my banks ATM and use my CC for any other purchases or online bill pay. I pay the balance off every month. Most CCs you receive reward money for purchases and payments on your CC. That’s a nice little bonus also.

I use my debit card ONLY for cash withdrawals AT my bank. Nowhere else, and nothing else.

I never buy anything via cellphone...never. All of my credit card purchases are on a single card, and I am notified of every transaction that exceeds a certain threshold amount. I'm persuaded that the vast majority of credit card fraud originates with compromised cellphone-originated transactions.

I pay by check for only one item: for my lawn service (same guy for over 20 years). He gives me an invoice with each weekly service, including the balance due on my account, and I pay that invoice immediately upon receipt - by mail. He once told me I could Zelle payments to him, and I said, "Na, I'm good with checks." These days, a check can be deposited via cellphone transaction, so it's not an inconvenience to him. Besides, he's not an accounting guru and I've frequently had to reconcile my "balance due" via specific checks, invoice numbers, service dates and dates the checks have cleared my bank. Sends him a nice message that I'm tracking what I owe.

Absolutely. This is what we do for big purchases.

I like the tap... a lot of the machines at least with my debit card don't even ask for a PIN.... and none do with my American Express of course.
for what it's worth I have a folding wallet and when it in my pocket that way all my cards are sandwiched between to pieces of 18gage copper .....
