I always liked guns with shorter barrels whether it be handguns, rifles or shotguns. I have read several places where the 16 inch barrel is the optimum length for the 22lr cartridge. It always irked me that Ruger would not make a standard stainless steel rifle with a 16 inch barrel so I was excited several years ago they came out with the takedown backpacker with that barrel length. I am not overly fond of the takedown though. Then a couple years ago I was on Davidsons gun gallery and saw this exclusive that had the 16 inch barrel so I ordered 2 of them. The only thing wrong with it was that ugly camouflage stock. So I changed the stocks and put bx triggers and a few other changes and to me, they are what a 10-22 should be.

IMHO, 16" is good enough for a 'chore gun'. A precision rifle benefits from a longer barrel due to the extra weight up front. An open sighted rifle benefits from longer sight separation.
As far as accuracy, there's probably not much difference in barrel length beyond 10-12".
The shorter barrels may cause accuracy issues at longer ranges when the bullets transition from super sonic to sub sonic--a longer barrel generating a bit more velocity will push that point further out.
 
After 1st yr when SBR stamps become free, I'm gonna cut one back to end of stock and hav it threaded. Have Me another KritterGetter!!
 
This is the first one I made up with a 16 inch barrel. It is about the best 10-22 that I have ever had. It has to be used with the original 10 round rotary magazine because the BX25 makes it look awkward and ungainly. It has an Altamont stock and BX trigger and carries like a dream. It's accurate and lines up quickly. I am very pleased with it.

Here’s a 16” with threaded barrel that I picked up a few years back, wish the grip area was the same shape as yours.

I pest hunt with my .22LR and prefer a bolt gun suppressed. In my opinion they’re a bit more quite than a semiauto. I wish Ruger would offer a 77/22 with carbon fiber barrel and a decent tupperware stock.

Just get a Ruger American compact with the threaded barrel and have the same results for less $$. Mine with a Form 1 muffler is suitably accurate, very quiet, and 100% functional.
 
I'm partial to the M77/22 over the 10/22 for most 22 hunting scenarios but my daughter found them too heavy for her liking, so for quite a few years she had a pretty pink stocked compact 10/22. I stumbled across this custom M77/22 with a 16" Tactical Solutions barrel on it and bought it for her. She loves it and the weight associated with the aluminum heavy barrel. For a "backcountry dinner rifle" the M77/22 is way too big so I bought one of the takedowns when they first came out but really hated how long it was when the suppressor was added. Tactical Solutions offers a wonderful option so you can maintain the legal barrel length and still have a removable can. You might notice a little wear on the metal trigger guard, I swapped out the factory plastic with a customized metal one, as this is a LOVED gun.

IF I remember correctly? Those 77/22's used the same V-block barrel connection system as the 10/22. So, you could put any .920 barrel, be it fluted, carbon fiber or just a standard Bull, on any of them by just opening up the barrel channel.
I do seem to recall an article in the American Rifleman magazine about this back in the early 90's...🤔

That about the nicest light carbine version of a 10-22 I've ever seen.
 
Nice looking rifles.

I have a pair of those TacSol barrels, one take-down and one fixed. Mine have performed quite well.

The 77/22 V-block is the same, but the barrel shank is longer on the 77/22 than on the 10/22, as well as having two extractor cuts.
 
I also read about the 16" barrel being optimum for a 22 LR so I bought a 10/22 youth barrel off eBay and assembled a shortie version. I had already added a BX trigger and a Hogue stock to match one of my Mini 30's. I don't know if it's more accurate although it seems to be depending on ammunition of course. Anyway it was fun and I like it better.

I just checked: my 25 year old(?) 77/22 has twin extractors while a new(ish) 10/22 has only one. :unsure:

I found in my notebook, that article was on page 26 of the May 1991 issue of American Rifleman. I'll try and dig that one out. But...Anything that far back would be boxed up and in my attic.
I don't recall it being just a simple drop in project, there were some modifications necessary to make it work.
 
Hi, what company makes the OD stock posted by Bulls-eye (6th post from top), also does the bottom of the stock(rear) hold extra magazine ?Very nice looking. Thank you for any help, great pictures.
